This might be difficult to answer, but I don't really know where to ask so, here are three questions you might be able to help with:
Last season aired an anime called Hakaba Kitarō, it was my first encounter with the revered franchise and I fell in love with it, thus making me the Kitarō fan that I am now. But the series story is a complicated one, not the anime's one mind you, but the manga's. They say that it was originally named Hakaba Kitarō and that it was later continued as GeGeGe no Kitarō to match the anime title, however this explication seems to be incomplete, Comipress special feature put it this way:
Manga Zombie wrote: | In 1960, Togetsu Shobō published Mizuki Shigeru's 'Kitarō, Demon of the Graveyard', from a story by Ito Masami. But when Volume 3 came out, Mizuki fell out with the publishing house over money, and jumped ship to the publisher Sanyō-sha. He went on to bring out 'Night Tales of Kitarō' (Kitarō Yawai). Meanwhile back at Togetsu, Takeuchi took over the helm of 'Kitarō, Demon of the Graveyard'. |
So the original manga by Mizuki Shigeru is only three volume long, (19 if you count the continuation by Takeuchi Kanko, but it isn't as recognized as the first 3 since it was kashihon) but if those three manga were republished as GeGeGe no Kitarō, than what the hell is 'Night Tales of Kitarō'? An why is the GeGeGe no Kitarō manga said to be 9 volume long? This is my first question.
Secondly, it is said that Gegege no Kitarō Part 2 began serialization in 2007 in Comic BonBon, that led me to question if they are any other Kitarō manga that I haven't heard of. Are they?
And finally, I'm currently going through Amazon.co.jp inventory of all thing Kitarō and I'm having some difficulties. The TV series are easy to find, (a boxset each for the first four seasons, one for the movie and 15 or so singles for the fifth) if not incredibly pricey, the three live-action movies are also hard to miss, plus they are relatively "cheap" (the last one even has English subs) and I'm not expecting to find any of the 16 volume by Takeuchi Kanko, (the kind of thing you'd have to go through some dark abandoned alley to find) but the amazing number of Kitarō books is puzzling, especially since I have no knowledge of Japanese. So what I need to know is if I buy new, will it ship internationally? If I buy through the user, will it ship internationally? And is there a kind soul with knowledge of Japanese that could help me do a rundown of the manga available there?
If I get only one answer I'll be happy. Thank you!

Ah, my favorite classic manga, eh?
2. There is a series called Hakaba no Kitaro! That was Shigeru's first work! I believe that one shows how Kitaro came to be Kitaro, and how Oyaji became Oyaji.
3. It's better if you buy it new. Don't worry; it'll ship internationally (probably). And I could help you out with your rundown job. No promises of accuracy, though, because I'm still learning the language.

Thank you so much sirgalahadthegreat! I thought I wouldn't get any reply on this one, it's not like Kitarō is a big star in the West or anything, but I was hoping to resolve my problem easily enough. Still my real dream would be to learn Japanese, go to Japan, track down the Takeuchi's ones, translate them, put them on the internet for everyone to see and that just for the hell of it.
Also, I'm very grateful that you are offering your help, but currently my computer can't read Japanese, so I have to wait until I have access to one that does to start the rundown. In the meantime, if you know something that could be helpful about the whole situation, I'd be overjoyed.
I've read a bit more about the manga history thing and I've made my theory; I think that Mizuki Shigeru's Kitarō is 3 volume long of Hakaba (no) Kitarō and 6 volume long of Kitarō Yawai later republished under the name of GeGeGe no Kitarō to match the anime. Of course I could be wrong and I also rode on Wikipedia (not the must trusted source, but...) that in Japan GeGeGe no Kitarō was translated in English. Thing is, only tree volumes are. Are those compilation of the 9 volumes or just the 3 first Hakaba (no) Kitarō and if yes, why is the remaining 6 aren't included? Oh, this is so confusing. I'll check out the Japanese Amazon and Wikipedia once I can to see if I can't make more sense with that.

So true, so true. I don't even think many people understand how great Kitaro really is.
And it's really tough, because since the work is so old most modern manga fans have forgotten it completely. Yet the series is really great, and I think most fans would really benefit immensely by reading it.
Awwwww, that's too bad about your computer. Let me know when you're ready, huh?

I have yet to read the manga or see the anime yet, but I really want to! Eiji Wentz was really cute as Kitaro in the live action film, and I can't wait for the sequel!

I really want to see the movie, I'm even thinking about getting the Japanese DVD now that my computer can read Region 2 (and since the DVD has English subs).
Oh and sirgalahadthegreat, I finally got hold of a computer that has the Japanese language installed and I was able to do check everything by myself with the Google translator, it is pretty crappy, but that's alright for basic information (and about the stuff on Amazon, they are mostly a bunch of different edition of the manga). And even better, GeGeGe no Kitarō as been licensed in France for sometime (can't believe I missed that) under the name of Kitaro le repoussant (added it on the encyclopedia) and I'm now reading it (just got volume 4)!
