The hiatus was frustrating but otherwise it was another incredible season, see you next time Subaru-kyōdai with another Konomi Suzuki / MYTH & ROID combo.

Nice that the audience doesn't have to suffer another 3 years like what happened with all previous seasons.

So, I absolutely hated season 3 but I've heard that the next arc is supposedly "incredible" and closer to season 1, which I'd really liked. Is this true? If it is, I can still be excited about season 4.

I wasn't personally frustrated, but I will say that I don't understand why seasons are split like that. Why not wait until everything is finished before airing the show? Maybe it's a compromise to allow the second half more time to cook, but I feel like it'd be much easier for fans and scheduling purposes if they waited for the entire cour, especially when the gap is fairly small (like, 6 months or less).

As a fan of seasons 1 and 2, who has not seen season 3, would it be better to wait for season 4 before I continue watching? Its been a few years since I watched it and I cant recall all the story beats. Im thinking it would be better to wait and simply watch seasons 1 and 2 again before season 4 starts. Would this be a good idea?

This season was shortest chapter in WN. Next chapter is longest one (excludes Volchala empire arc that got so bloated was split in to two arcs).

The next arc is really good. Following two not so good, then the current arc in WN spoiler[with Al is all over the place.]

Season 3 feels like an entirely different show. And not in a good way.

It's always hard to say arc/season X is closer to arc/season Y because people inevitably assume that means they'll just rehash the formula when in reality, the similarities are usually more on the superficial side and the differences are just as relevant. That said, I'd say this next arc is a sort of mix between Arc 3 (the second half of S1) and Arc 4 (Season 2).

As you can gather from the teaser, it's an "on the road" arc and rather than a "gathering" of the larger cast, it focuses on a small section of it - compare how the commemorative illustration for each of the previous seasons tends to have several dozen characters in in it, but S4 only has 9 characters (10 if you include Patrasche), so the dynamic and flow of things will be fairly different. In terms of themes, it's back to the "larger picture" issues rather than the royal selection or the witch cult activities.

I wouldn't say it's *necessary* but if you feel like watching S1/2 again it'll definitely help you appreciate the finer details in S4. For S3, while it's ending segues directly into the content of S4, you won't see as many callbacks to it's events in the upcoming season, so I'd say you can largely watch it whenever, as long as it's before watching S4 of course.

To be clear I'm definitely not saying Season 3 is filler or anything. It's just the way the story is structured. If they were adapting the current arc of the Light Novel, I'd advise you to rewarch Season 3.

Yeah, if Arc 5 wasn't your cup of tea, there's a high chance that the next arc will be.

For what it's worth, Arc 5 usually isn't people's first picks for favorite arc, precisely because it's so different. It's usually 4 or 6, with 3 not too far behind.

Really? I think 2 and 3 are by far my favourites, but I'm anime only of course. Anyway, thanks to all who answered, I'll definitely watch season 4 then.

Arc 5 felt to me like a catharsis-driven battle shounen for a good chunk of its run, which appeals to me less than the mystery aspect of the series, but the novel had a lot more in there to chew on than the anime, so I liked it more. Arc 6, however, is easily my favorite arc. It does something I hated so much that I was on the verge of considering dropping it (I took a "let's see where it's going with this" approach instead) and I'm so glad I didn't, because the choice to do that thing I hated culminated into what I consider possibly the best scenes in the series, if not possibly one of the best across the anime/manga/LN landscape, giving meaning to the thing I thought had ripped the substance of the show out from under its own feet. I sincerely hope they're able to capture it well in the anime.

Yes, arc 4 and 6 tend to be the reader's favorites. People who keep up with the novels tend to be into the mysteries and the deeper lore and arc 4 is basically the foundation of all that, - for the first time you stop focusing solely on what's directly in front of Subaru and start to take note of just how deep everything runs, so it's something we'll come back to time and again and is almost guaranteed to come up in any discussion about theories. It's also an arc that turns everything that came before it on its head - I remember people losing their minds when the full extent of Roswaal's pre-planning was revealed.

That's said, it's a difficult material to adapt and properly convey its meaning and message, so I kinda expected it not to resonate as well with Anime onlies- and while I still think it largely did what it had to do, it still could have been more. That said, arc 6 doesn't share alot of those difficulties, so I'm optimistic it'll be a good adaptation.
