I'm just finding out of the Sasaki and Miyano banning as of this morning. The recommendations this board member's making for alternatives despite the fact some of them (Chainsaw Man and Seven Deadly Sins) are far worst than the content in Sasaki and Miyano, or amuse me considering another title (Sailor Moon) has another same-sex pairing in it. Makes one wonder if this board member actually read the manga in question. Laughing

Nothing really new about this, other than it's resurfacing again. States and school boards fighting over content is an ongoing battle. Locals should rise up and fight it.

But the more insidious challenge is in the digital domain. Where book banning is done invisibly and usually without notice. No laws need be passed. And usually no effective recourse is available to fight such decisions.

I agree. Censorship and banning done at the distribution level is a much more sinister practice that affects everyone involved and not just kids at one specific school. "Protecting the kids" is one thing but "protecting the adults" is just silly. 35 year old people do not need protection from reading Mushoku Tensei uncensored or playing Dragon Quest unedited.

The only saving grace is in 2024 it's incredibly hard to keep the wool over people's eyes and it's very easy for people to stay informed on what's been censored and banned. It's also very easy to procure the original version for consumption.

It's still crazy they actually made them re-record the line in Japanese for the official Disney version.

When people want things banned, you should look at why. Most of the time they tell you all you need to know.

I say that they should totally go with Sailor Moon if they're going to replace Sasaki and Miyano, as long as they include all the volumes with the queer characters to keep things nice and balanced Laughing

Anyway, this whole situation is offensive and dumb but that's sadly what I expect from my former home state these days.

The fact any manga is allowed in school libraries amazes me. Our school never had any manga. And they banned stuff like Yu-Gi-Oh cards and those digital pet things.

I'm going to guess they haven't considering they answered 'No' to the question about having read the work they wanted banned...yet another clue as to their true motives here.

As for Sailor Moon, maybe they just remember the "cousins" from the original American edit...

Wait. The controversial Chainsaw Man chapter was actually edited or something? Part 1 had similar adult scenes including a cover of Reze naked but never heard there was censorship.

All fans can do is make loud noise and hopefully it reversed like they have with cases like Mushoku Tensei or I Think I Turned My Childhood Friend Into a Girl. Or at least raise a big enough stink to get people to notice like with Discotek's Lovely Complex, Cat Ninden Teyandee, and Lupin III releases. Companies are less likely to try it if they know people are watching.

Unfortunately the problem that always pops up with this topic is people generally reveal themselves to be okay with censorship and banning works if it's stuff they don't like.

That parent is keeping someone from reading that at the local library but now anyone who hears about this controversy will know about the book and find alternative means to access it if they want to. It is certainly a loss if people can no longer check it out but I would bet the number of people reading it is more than before. Banning fiction is not a helpful tool for anyone except people who have a personal beef with a subject.

Libraries are literally getting bomb threats for having books about gay penguins but ok. Totally not important or sinister at all.

There was no censorship. Just a lot of back and forth with people being weird about because on one end you had a lot of folks who saw it explotive and bad simply because it depicted something so uncomfortable, and other the other end you had people treating the whole thing as some weird joke because they saw Denji getting repeatately taken advantage of by the women in his life as darkly hilarious. Kind of the worst of both worlds

I think you misunderstand the point of these complaints. The goal is not about hiding a book from the public eye or caring what people read in their free time. It's about parents not wanting certain books at schools being available at schools where they can't monitor what their kids are doing or more intrusively where it's forced upon students by teachers as required reading. The latter is usually reserved for more literary books like To Kill a Mockingbird though rather than pop fiction. Outside of school parents can set rules and boundaries with their kids with things like parental controls on the internet or television.
