I love how Girls Band Cry stirred up some drama about stolen subtitles. An Anilist user accused someone of stealing their work. It was then revealed that the accused, had just used Machine Translation (MTL) to translate the French release from ADN and edited it slightly. Which then in turn pointed out that the AL user was also using MTL. Despite them claiming it was all original work.
Technically Blue Archive does have an English sub on Ani-One Asia. Sadly, it's terrible. Tonbo is also free to watch on iQIYI if you don't mind adverts. |

Amusing to see this topic get covered today, because this was definitely a thing in the early days of simulcasting, especially up through 2011 or so, as 2012 was roughly the point where nearly all of the big name licensors finally joined the simulcasting bandwagon, leaving very few gaps from that point on. If I remember correctly, Toei was the last big name to finally sign on, around the end of 2011.
And now, when we're finally at the point where the only "mainstream" anime in Japan that's still without a simulcast of any sort is pretty much just Sazae-san, we're actually starting "miss out" on certain titles once again. |

While not as important in Japan as Sazae-san, I'd like to name Pokémon here as well. The anime to one of the largest gaming and media franchises out there is still only available through fansubs. Which is really weird given that I do see some interest in it at times. So it makes you wonder why they don't release any official subs if people would like to throw money at them. I can see The Pokémon Company wanting to avoid third parties for subbed releases (Crunchyroll, Hidive, Netflix, etc.), but then why not just release them yourself? Looking at the amount of stuff this company is pumping out, how come a streaming service for their own series isn't part of it? There's probably a lot more to it than it seems, including licensing in the west, but yeah, it's weird. So for now we'll have to wait a year for a dub or find other ways to watch the show... |

Isn't Pokemon streamed globally on Netflix and via the Switch app? |

The Pokemo anime app on Switch got shut down. Plus, they didn't even have every single season or all the movies, anyway. |

I do wish Himitsu no AiPri got a simulcast somewhere.
The Pretty Series was finally getting some legal streaming in the early 2020s, but now we're in the backwaters of anime society once again. |

It's complicatedTM. But it's always the dub, no sub in any country. And the switch app... well, that was shut down last month. Together with the streams through the official website. |

A lot of the shows I get excited for rarely ever get picked up for streaming. This has been true for years. Nobody picked Fafner The Beyond (in fact, Crunchy let Exodus expire), Danball went unlicensed for years until the butchered Nick airing (and never hit the best season AKA Wars) stuff like Megaton Musashi being MIA for years (until the recent announcement recently that the show would be getting a streaming release...somewhere)
FuniNico was certainly an experience, not to mention how weird Symphogear's first season with...everything. |
