I have to say that Advent Children was my first exposure to Final Fantasy VII, I was around like 4 or 5 when the original game came out, so I wasn't aware of it's legacy, not to mention that since it was a text-heavy game it wasn't very popular here in Latin America since it never got an official translation, despite the fact that PSOne games where very easy to pirate. You could find a pirated copy of the European Spanish translation... which wasn't very good, "allé voy". I guess Advent Children was the introduction to FFVII to many other as well
Going back to Advent Children, I first saw some mentions about the movie in old video game magazines like Atomix and Club Nintendo and I have to admit that 12 year old me thought it look very cool, so much different from any other CGI films from the era. Though I have to admit that I never saw the movie in its entirety, I think they showed it once on Animax Latin America, which made sense since the channel was managed by Sony, but it was one of the animations that it was showned only with subtitles, and it was the English dub for some reason, despite a studio making a demo dub for Sony Television
I think that Advent Children is as important to the FInal Fantasy VII series as much as the original game itself, the PS3 Demo and the whole Remake aesthetics seems to emulate the look of the movie in real time. Not to mention how Cloud's alt look in Smash Bros. and Sefirot's reveal trailer for Smash Ultimate makes references to the movie, they even updated his Final Smash to include Omnislash Ver. 5

I'm not one for hyperbole, but I found AC's story and characters to just be terrible. But, I really didn't care. The action sequences are so magnificently over-the-top; break-neck paced, but thanks to slight pauses to let you get your bearings, I could still follow where people and objects were in relation to one another so they didn't just end up a nonsensical blur. I ended up really liking the movie overall in a completely, unabashedly unironic way off the strength of them alone. I have no idea how I would react to the movie now in my advancing age, and I'm not likely going to ever watch it again, but hey, I enjoyed myself when I did back in the day.

I'm the same as others. Advent was my first experience with 7. This was followed by crisis core, dirge(sadly) and finally actually beating 7 on the switch. I really enjoy Advent for what it is: a glorious excuse to have anime Shonen fight scenes with photorealistic(for the time) animation. Also, surprised their was no mention of the banger score. The black mages version of One Winged Angel and the high octane remix of "those who fight further" are my favorite IMO. Also, this is the dub I think of when I see FF7(George Newborn will always be Sephiroth in my eyes). Its not great, but this movie is very fun to turn on and just look at pretty colors.

Spirit Within. The most beautiful movie ever related with gaming. It never divided anybody

Geez, until tonight I don't think I'd watched it again since it came out when I was in college, unlike Spirits Within. Actually was fun watching it in Japanese, with no subtitles. There's only maybe a dozen lines of dialogue that were difficult to understand... mostly just Vincent and Cloud talking in the ancient capital. Ookawa Tooru as Rufus was a lot more familiar of a voice to me this time round, with more than Roy Mustang under his belt, like Arawn and Heathcliff.
...But uh, apparently there's a complete edition that came out later? Maybe I'll watch that in another decade or two.

Funny I thought that Advent Children was rather celebrated as being true to the spirit of the game and it was Spirits Within that was the controversial one. Yeah it is cheesy but it was for fans of a jRPG, it didn't want to try and be a high stakes drama like Spirits Within, but a bunch of game material in amazing set pieces.

That's always been the case in my experience as well. Back when AC came out everyone was gushing over it and saying it was what Spirits Within should have been.

Is it weird to have noticed, when watching Advent Children on the big screen last week, how many shots from Sephiroth’s reveal video for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate came straight out of Advent Children? Like, you’ve literally got the “Cloud impaled” shot, but this time it’s Mario, and we cut to show the Masamune just has him by the suspender. Or how it ends on the “stay where you belong, in my memories” / “I will never be a memory” line.

Guess Nintendo liked the Tarantino scene of Cloud vs Sephiroth

Well, Sakurai and his team always try to represent third-party guest characters in Smash the best they can, even in the most detailed way possible. I still remember how many people were saying that Sakurai understood Cloud better than Square when he first showed up in Smash For WiiU and 3DS just by the subtle references in his trailer, like the shot of him being dizzy on the King of Red Lions being a reference to the fact that he had had some motion sickness problems in the original game. Some even said that Nintendo went out of their way for a character that was practically an unofficial mascot for their main rivals. I also think Sakurai told people to watch Advent Children during the Sephiroth's presentation
Now that I think about it, while I have no complaints that Cloud and Sephiroth are playable characters in Smash, I wish there was more represention to the Final Fantasy series as a whole in Smash Bros., all of the content it's just FFVII related, even Joker brought some Persona 3 and 4 content and The Hero represents DQ as a whole (though with a bigger emphasis on DQXI) . A similar thing happens with Ryu and Ken, all of the music related to them is from SFII

Considering it killed Square’s film branch and probably put a few people out of work…..

I was the then-current webmaster of a certain very old (even then!) FFVII fansite when Advent Children came out. It was an interesting time in the fandom, that's all I'll say
