It's kinda hilarious that someone would sell bootleg merch of an anime franchise that's pretty much a dead fad.

From what I understand Naruto is still one of the most-streamed back-catalog anime titles on the sites it's on. Hell, I've seen middle schoolers today walking around wearing Naruto merch. It's hardly forgotten, and there's clearly enough money left in it to make attempting to sell bootleg merch worthwhile.

Yeah, my nephew has Naruto posters in his room, and he's 11. The anime ended when he was 5.

The show is still popular all around the world especially for littler kids and in other countries in Europe, South America and other African and Asian nations.
So these guys pretty much tried to pocket those markets with naruto and probably hoped they could get away selling bootleg merch. they were wrong.

Calling Naruto a "fad" is the dumbest thing one can say, unless a fad can last for over 20 years. You may as well call DBZ and One Piece fads.
I do have fond memories of when the first Pokemon film released, and critics were calling it a fad. LOL.

And this will stop a grand total of maybe 2% of the influx of bootleg goods, and just for Naruto.
Money well spent, TV Tokyo. You sure showed those counterfeiters.

Yeah the whole idea that naruto isn't popular anymore is silly, especially considering its sequel series Boruto is still going strong, regardless of how you feel about its quality. Also my Boss at work literally just finished watching the show, and we had a conversation about it so, yeah I think it's still decently popular.

I still remember a news article when Pokemon Go first relesed that called the franchise a "Mega-fad". Some people just can't accept it when something they don't like/respect/acknowledge is popular

I'm pretty sure TV Tokyo isn't under any illusions that these lawsuits are going to result in any damages being paid to them, or even act as a deterrent to overseas bootleg manufacturers or their networks of online shops.
It's likely moreso to set court case precedents in cases like these that could, in theory, be used as evidence to push for new laws and regulations that actually could be effective against this sort of thing; or even more, to give them leverage in negoations with other countries involved in this sort of thing in trade negotiations.
It doesn't really cost _that_ much money to sue someone who doesn't even attempt to defend themselves... And it leaves a nice legal paper trail for the future.

Counterfeiters don't care because they are so numerous. They don't care about case precedents, or even what enforcement measures will be taken. It's just like with scam call centers in India. There are so unbelievably many of them that it just doesn't matter.
eBay has looooong since outright stopped reviewing user reports and flags over counterfeit goods because they simply can't do anything about it. They shut down one account, ten more pop up. They don't shut down any, ten more still pop up. They block certainly products, they simply work around them.

Naruto is the most series that i seen on hoodies and merch in real life. it is that successful.
