Damn, two manga creators died in just two consecutive days; first Tominaga and the next day Kentaro Miura. I don't know about Tominaga's works, but at least he lived a long life.

Actually, 『チンコロ姐ちゃん』, the title of a manga by Tominaga Ichirō, is Chinkoro Nē-chan. See this Yomiuri article about Tominaga. The kanji '姐' has furigana, and the furigana are 'ねえ'. https://www.yomiuri.co.jp/culture/subcul/20210522-OYT1T50147/ When a person who is fluent in Japanese sees the Japanese word '姐ちゃん', it is unlikely that 'ane-chan' occurs to him/her as the 1st candidate for the way to read the word, because whilst to read '姐ちゃん' as 'nē-chan' is a common way, to read '姐ちゃん' as 'ane-chan' is an uncommon way. The Daijirin dictionary says:
Famous British Japanologist Dr Carmen Blacker used Kōdansha's Nihongo Daijiten dictionary in her office. What Japanese dictionary do you use, Ms Hodgkins? |
