Very early comment before reading much - previous years had each article be released on separate days, was this year's decision to have it all at once on purpose or did I catch an early mistake?
Also, the user poll gives me a "Survey has not started." message
My best anime this year unsurprisingly Sengoku Youko. It's one of my favorite manga, Satoshi Mizukami can do no wrong, and I even liked Biscuit Hammer even though the anime is atrocious from a production standpoint because it was just "rereading the manga but worse" which is still good because I just like the writing that much. Wasn't different here - I feel like the anime adaptation particularly fumbled a lot of my favorite character's moments, but it was still like a 'reread but worse' situation where it's just that good to revisit all this. Not counting that and movies, it goes to Delicious in Dungeon as well, with its second half in particular really finding its stride
Best moment probably needs to go to Nier Automata's switch of main characters. I've never played the game and have no idea if people who have like the adaptation, but this came as a bit of a welcome surprise to me, as A2 in general felt like a better character than either 2B or 9S
Best song goes to Monogatari Off Season / Nademonogatari. Monogatari's iterative character songs serving as openings always do well, and this was no exception - even if I think it's not the strongest song by this character. Somehow Monogatari also managed to have the worst song of the year in its ED too
While my favorite movie is also Look Back, I'll give a shoutout to Haikyu The Dumpster Battle, which enhanced that particular match really well with a pretty spectacular match point
My worst can go to either Viral Hit being my fastest drop this year, with its very very obnoxious humor and even premise, or BUCCHIGIRI?! that I think really fumbled the bag with its colorful cast of character and good production in the last few episodes and plot developments

A bit surprised DiD beat out DDD in the overall ranking, but not surprised both beat DDDDD. Extra D's a clear stumbling block.
More surprised that Train to the End of the World placed above Apothecary Diaries. I adored Train, but have definitely seen more folks -- including ANN staff, even, I think -- gushing about the latter.

Quote: | At the end of the day, though, all of those elements are simply building off the true cornerstone of DAN DA DAN's success: The strength of its characters and the relationships they build throughout their story. |
Meh, the strength of DAN DA DAN is the animation and direction. Alternate reality where the show has the animation and direction of a more mundane anime, nobody would eve remember it has its playing, let alone the character "great relationship". "Dude, this loser boy get the two most popular chick obsessed with him almost right away, just because plot has forced them to interact!" isn't exactly high art and has been done a million time, just rarely with this budget and directorial talent.
Ask almost anyone what the best sequence in the show is and they'll point to the witch flashback in episode 7. But isn't that a little bit weird? The sequence involved none of our main character. It involves two side character, both of which essentially only exist for that sequence. It might as well be an unrelated short story. And its followed by event that are completely divorced from it in episode 8.
So why is it that this sequence work so much and is "...one of the best things I've had the pleasure of experiencing all year.", despite not having what is supposed to be the best part of the show? Because animation and direction rule everything else, and the rest is just accessory. It's why stuff like solo leveling is so popular despite having sewage level everything else and its why so many show that actually have great character and relationship, but mundane art and direction, are barely remembered a few days down the line.

I’m going to start with my best and worst anime picks (rare that I have a worst) then talk about characters, songs etc. later.
Best: Nina the Starry Bride
It was a hard choice since I found several new faves this year (plus the return of GOAT Natsume), but I have to give Nina my best award. It’s heartfelt and exciting, with GREAT characters, and an MC I just adore! Plus, the characters and setting are SO pretty, as are the songs and soundtrack.
Honorable Mentions: The Demon Prince of Momochi House, Himitsu no AiPri, Natsume’s Book of Friends Season 7, A Sign of Affection, Tonari no Yokai-san, Wonderful Pretty Cure!
Worst: Fluffy Paradise
I thought this would be good, and it was really good until the “survival of the fittest” thing was suggested to the dog people with a human level of sapience as an “escape” from racist persecution. I dropped it after 10 episodes and I’m glad I did, since apparently it got worse from there. A real shame, because I did like the tiger a lot.
Also worth noting that watching Wonderful Pretty Cure! did mitigate my disappointment in this one, since it’s a MUCH better show about befriending animals.[/b]

I have seen so many anime this year that it is honestly staggering to think about having to make a ranked list. So I am just going to name a few that left an impression:
Make Heroine ga Oosugiru! due to how attached I became to that group of goofballs dealing with all sorts of drama while also having lots of dumb fun.
Dungeon Meshi due to making the dungeon that I have seen or read about so many times in other series interesting again with fresh ideas and a group of adventurers that are out of the norm to say the least.
Bleach for making me feel excited about how the amazing looking fights will turn out and what bullshit power is next to be shown off (basically feeling like a teenager again).
Frieren for being a fantasy anime that made the calm moments just as interesting as the hectic ones and for oozing with charm every single moment.
Shinigami Bocchan had a great final season and the show as a whole kept getting better until the very end (considering I found the first season to be disappointing it being here is wild to me if I think about it).
Apothecary Diaries had me hooked every single episode even if it had me feeling a bit stupid at times for not making a connection earlier.

Tonari no Youkai-san

Astro Note
Kimi ni Todoke S3 (From me to You S3)
Jii-san Baa-san Wakagaeru (Granpa & Grandma turn young again)
Natsume Yuujinchou Shichi (Natsume's Book of Friends S7)
TP Bon
Boku no Tsuma wa Kanjou ga Nai (My Wife has no Emotions)
DanDaDan
SAND LAND: THE SERIES

Hibike! Euphonium S3 (Sound! Euphonium S3)
Mushoku Tensei II: Isekai Ittara Honki Dasu Part 2 (Jobless Reincarnation S2 Part 2)
Murai no Koi (Murai in Love)
Shinigami Bocchan to Kuro Maid S3 (The Duke of Death and his Maid S3)
Shows which stood out as mediocre/boring for me:
Uzumaki
Madougushi Dahlia wa Utsumukanai (Dhalia in Bloom)
Tower of God S2
Kami wa Game ni Ueteiru (Gods Games we Play)
Unnamed Memory
Blue Archive: The Animation
Vampire Dormitory
Metallic Rouge
Kekkon Yubiwa Monogatari (Tales of Wedding Rings)
DekiSoko (The Banished Former Hero Lives as He Pleases)
Maou Gakuin no Futekigousha S2 (The Misfit of Demon King Academy S2 Part 2)
There's plenty more but my list would be 200+ entries long, and there's quite a few I have yet to watch as well.
e: OK I'm going to stop adding shows now.

This whole thing makes me more upset they didn't dub Bravern. That and it being a bit too rushed near the end for my personal tastes.
Still, can't argue with DanDaDan and Dungeon Meshi respectively. Both are great shows. And I'm looking at my watch waiting on the second seasons of both.

Best? Maybe Beastars season 3. It really felt like a coming of age story properly focused on Legoshi questioning or trying to understand the society now that he left school and was confused by his new life.
Best character? A tie between Momo Ayase and Mappa's Ranma. Ayase is quite the ideal friend though that's mostly when she defends Okarun. Her previous relationship is played for laughs but it's kinda disturbing. Okarun and Ayase are quite wholesome together. Mappa's Ranma is too different from Deen's Ranma. He is not a jerk but instead a bit innocent who quickly becomes interested in Akane's life.
Best moment? Nier Automata pulled a scene similar to the ending of Evangelion tv and Hunter x Hunter's Chimera where characters express their feelings for a long time. The original scene was impossible to adapt in a tv series so I kinda see why Yoko Taro considering Evangelion and Berserk as his favorite works. The scene though ends with one of the most surprising twists.
Best song? "Fatal". The Oshi no Ko opening. It sure is hard to compete with Yoasobi but it 's pretty catchy. Still, I think this will be remembered more for Ruby's dance.
Best movie? Maybe seed Freedom? It's like Fukuda heard all the complaints about Destiny and decided to answer that in the movie. Kira is more vulnerable than in Destiny and there is animation for more fights. Shinn is more appealing instead of antagonistic. Lacus has quite complicated role in the story that challenges her feelings for Kira and tests their relationship.
Best manga? Definitely Vinland Saga. Don't want to spoil it but everybody who studied history should really what's the big deal behind Thorfinn and Vinland and Yukimura seems to be writing the climax considering the content of this year's chapters.
Best video game? I didn't play a single 2024 game....
Worst? I consider Blue Lock a guilty pleasure. The animation is horrible but the plot keeps it's Squid Game aura that makes some scenes unpredictable. There is also Uzumaki which hyped me due to the author but there wasn't a single scene that scared me. Frieren comes across as disappointment cos the entire second cour was devoted to a Hunter exam arc which is kinda ridiculous considering even the Mazoku arc was shorter. It bothered me Sein and Stark were removed from the story like if the author had no idea what to do with them.

Mushoku Tensei was always a controversial series but the ending of season 2 hit me bad..... Rudeus is gonna marry all his love interests? Feels really weird in for my culture. Then again even Demon Slayer played with this.

Top Ten (in no particular order)
Frieren: Beyond Journey's End
Shangri-La Frontier
UNDEAD UNLUCK
The Apothecary Diaries
The Dangers in My Heart S2
Sengoku Youko
Brave Bang Bravern!
Spice and Wolf: merchant meets the wise wolf
YATAGARASU: The Raven Does Not Choose Its Master
DAN DA DAN
Character
Maomao is the real answer, but I'm going with The Fable's core cast, as the show's Fargo-but-make-it-yakuza vibes live and die by them.
Moment
Among a bunch of good options, I'm gonna go with The Dangers in My Heart- Ichikawa's confession under the torii
Song
Can't not go with Bravern's opening, just pure joy, but I want to shout out Ossan Newbie Adventurer's opening for also hearkening back to another older hot-blooded style.
Movie
Gurren Lagann: Childhood's End/The Lights in the Sky are Stars - Hey, it got a theatrical run, it counts (I can't believe this was a year where I got to see ten anime films in the theater, and still missed even more). I watched and loved the series back when it first came out, but never bothered with the movies as they were 'just' compilations, and I still can't believe how much more than that they ended up being.
Manga/LN
I've read over 400 volumes of manga this year, so I could do whole lists here, but I'll keep it short:
New manga - Sketchy - Just some ladies living (or learning to live) their lives with skateboards
Continuing manga - Touge Oni - Excellent early early Japanese mythological fantasy
LN - Irina The Vampire Cosmonaut - I loved the places this goes after the anime ends
Video Game
FFVII Rebirth (but my PS5 died when it was time to go North in the game and I haven't been able to replace/finish it yet D:)
Worst
Bye, Bye Earth - I'll spare Uzumaki because I only watched the first episode for the sake of the animation before bailing because Junji Ito's just not my bag, and instead turn to a show that started with a neat idea and completely squandered it in short order.

I hope you leave takes like this in 2024 and grow as a person in 2025; seems like a lot of energy wasted when you could simply not engage.
As for me, 2024 felt like it was here and gone in a blink; I don't watch, read, play everything. I'd hope no one does, honestly. But of what I did watch, read, play, etc., Dandadan is one that I can't say has ever disappointed me.
