Most of it looks good, except for the CG tank like things.

Those times when I have to ask "Do they know what it means to 86 something?"

I just picked up the LN! I'm so happy this is getting an adaptation.

To my knowledge, the author never makes it clear whether a reference to the American slang for "86" was intended, but it would absolutely fit; in the story, the 86th sector is the "nonexistent" sector where all the minority races for the Republic of San Magnolia are forced to live. Minorities - basically, anyone who doesn't have light skin and silver hair - are called "86s" and treated like Jews were in WW2-era Germany, except that they're expected to die in battle against an invading army of automatons rather than being exterminated in death camps. (Yeah, this one can get very dark and heavy on its racism elements.)
Kept up with the novel releases, so this is probably now my most-anticipated title for the Spring '21 season. Very curious to see how the adaptation is handled, since the second and third novels mostly happen during a time skip at the end of the first novel.

The best thing I can say about the footage is that it definitely looks like 86 in animated form!
I know people were worried from the initial Key Visual, but that looks like Shin and Lena to me. Lena also sounds much better from the initial teaser. I wasn't quite sure about Shin but he sounded good at the end.
It's also kind of neat seeing the Republic and the battlefield in visual form.
The CG for the Mecha looks pretty good, which I know people are generally pretty worried about. Looks like they'll move as well as they do in the LN.
Hiroyuki Sawano? Vocal tracks? I'm in.
And that is a perfect key visual with Shin and Lena together, Lena looking gorgeous and Shin sitting on the battlefield like he's seen some @#$%.

I don't know if they'll attempt to do a full one-cour of just the first volume (I'm not even sure if there's enough material) but I would have to assume they'll try to do volumes 1-3 since it has the best end point for a season.

The author talks about it as being the source of the name in the v1 afterword.

Yeah, 12-13 episodes for volumes 1-3 feels about right. I also agree that the end of volumes 1 and 3 (for non-novel readers, both volumes end on the same scene told from different viewpoints) is the ideal stopping point if no more than one cour ever gets animated.

If Sawano is involved I'll have to at least give this series a shot

Interesting as it shows a lot of thought was put into it if the author tries to nail the title in a single word rather than an entire sentence. The PV look good so I would watch it.
