16 people confirmed dead by NHK just now.

Honestly, all I can do is cry.

So many talented people who made wonderful and hartwarming shows were murdered today...

Why does something so beautiful have to be destroyed?

This news will haunt me these couple of weeks...

Absolutely tragic. Terrible.
It’s not only the deceased. The injuries and trauma for the survivors are truly horrific.

Have they confirmed any identities of the dead yet? What's the protocol for when they do?

Easy now. Let's let justice take its course. The last thing we need is more dead bodies due to retaliation.

What a catastrophe. To all the obvious reasons mentioned I have to add that this is also disastrous for the anime industry as a whole with the one studio hit that was always the pioneer for stuff like working conditions, payments, gender equality, nurturing youth, finding new talent, down to planing and organization.
That thought came to me in addition to the incredible loss of human life and creative power.
~30 artists died today and one alone had the power to move millions...
It just hurts.

So many death people, it's horrible.
[unproven affirmation removed - by me]

Also, revenge has never constructed anything.

My heart goes out to the families that lost their loved ones because of this senseless act. So many talented people gone. This is a dark day for the anime industry. I seriously hope this doesn't bring more people in to do these kinds of things to other studios.

I hope the suspect is given life in prison or the death penalty if found guilty.

If the information leaked online is truth... then,
spoiler[Unfortunately, the directors of Ms. Kobayashi's Maid Dragon, Hibike , Suzumiya, etc. are confirmed dead.
I am not saying that other dead people were not important, but the directors were behind a lot of what made Kyoto Animation what it was. Sad ]

There are no names put out. This information, at this point in time, is false.

This is... well, awful is an understatement, but I have no other words.

I'd always heard that Japan had some of the best fire response teams and emergency services in the world, especially in the metropolitan areas. The casualty count alone, never mind the current death toll (20) seems excessive. I can't help but wonder what the circumstances here are, and I hope ANN reports them. E.G how was the arsonist able to cause so much damage without being noticed? Why were people unable to safely evacuate? Were safety regulations ignored (alarm failures, unsafe working conditions, overcrowded workspaces, etc.)?

I think we're all sort of just waiting for the coin flip: a disgruntled employee, another insane otaku, or something else entirely. But more than who, I am more concerned with how. This should not have happened.

According to the news in my country, the arsonist is about 40 years old and was saying repeatedly "you're going to die." He's also in a hospital due to injuries, and police are watching over him meanwhile.
