Heh, Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite is snubbed while Smash Bros. continues to have two entries represented.

Must be quite a blow for the people who worked on the game, especially the people in charge, as Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite comes across to me as a game made by people desperately wanting for it to be in EVO.

Snubbing MvC:I, which unpopular as it turned out to be would garner SOME kind of audience, in favor of BlazBlue RWBY-Is-In-It-Please-Buy, which I should note comes out a mere 2 months before Evo, is...really something. Courting the now suddenly top dog ArcSys? Following the nose to where they figure the hype will be? Sending a message to Capcom? Perhaps someone out there has more insight than me.

Probably just wanted at least one traditional hand-drawn 2D fighter in the mix.

While the graphics, roster, voice acting, and music were laughably mediocre for MvC:I, I always thought the general consensus was that the fighting system was quite solid. Perhaps this move will wake Capcom up. After the shaky launch of SFV, I thought they would have learned their lesson for MvC:I. What a shame.

I'm of the mind Marvel is mostly to blame for this. I mean look at the roster of Marvel characters. The game might as well have been called MCU vs Capcom: Infinite. I mean, really...Black Widow? Winter Soldier? Gamora? Who wanted these characters? The whole thing reeks of their influence, and aside from the graphical fidelity, excluding the X-men doomed the game from the start. Sure Capcom haven't been great lately, but if SFV:AE is any consolation, it seems they're trying their hardest to make things right. Feels like a classic case of corporate suits thinking they know best what consumers want when in fact they have absolutely no clue.

Honestly, WS would have been a great addition if the game didn't already have Chris Redfield in it and I'm not really opposed to having Gamora in it seeing how she plays, but yes this reeks of MCU influence. No X-Men pretty much solidified that I was not buying the game when it came out.

There was also that comment that one of the games creators (I forget his name) saying that the only reason people cared about Magneto was because of how he played and not because of who he was as a character which is complete garbage.

That wasn't one of the "creators: of MvC:I, but rather that was FGC pro Combofiend, who was employed by Capcom to help promote the game. Since he had to toe the Capcom line, he couldn't go giving in to fans' (legitimate) complaints about the lack of any non-MCU characters who had been in the series before, but his excuse was a perfect example of how NOT to address stuff like this.

Was he wrong in his explanation as to why Magneto was so popular? Not completely, as Magneto's play style was definitely a major factor as to why he was used so often in MvC2, & why he was brought back for MvC3. If he played any differently, then there's a good chance that he wouldn't have become so synonymous with the "Marvel vs." franchise.

That being said, to completely discredit the fact that people also loved that the character that played in that "function" was Mag-freaking-neto was some of the stupidest spin one could use. If anything, I'd guess that Combofiend was told by Capcom that Marvel (and, by association, Disney) wanted to downplay any non-MCU characters when it came to discussion, so he decided to explain that, while Magneto wouldn't be in the game, his gameplay style (or "function") would still be there in some form via another character, so Magneto players could use that character instead.

Unfortunately, Combofiend decided to say such a thing in the most insulting way out there, for whatever reason. Honestly, though, I'm not surprised that MvC:I won't be officially played at Evo this year. Capcom doubled-down on aiming primarily at the fighting game community, and seemingly learned next to nothing with how botched Street Fighter V's original launch was. It doesn't matter how good the mechanics of the fighting game are if the overall package doesn't keep everyone, including a general audience, interested in the first place. I like SFV, & I'm sure I'd love MvC:I, but I'm not an online player, so Capcom really lost me hard with these two games, and only recently has SFV finally reached feeling like a "normal" fighting game (&, even then, Capcom still messed it up slightly).

Wasn't he one of the most used characters in the 2nd game alongside Sentinel,Cable, & Storm?

Everything Marvel in general went downhill in quality when promoting the movieverse became top priority in everything. It's just more apparent here when we have past games to compare this to. No X-Men, because avoiding promoting a competitor's movies is more important than fans of the franchise. Not even Wolverine, which is amazing considering how much Marvel milked him in the 90s and 00s. Instead we have Black Widow, who literally no one outside fans of the movieverse cares about because she's so irrelevant. I can't even be excited about Ms. Marvel being in the game finally because it's the horrendous Captain Marvel version of her they've been pushing for the past few years.

I'm of the belief that a good crossover game with a large roster should pick both the well-known and the obscure. Black Widow has had her own comic book series and was a frequent member of the Avengers before the movie. Winter Soldier was a major adversary too. As for Gamora, I feel Star-Lord should've taken priority by virtue of him being the protagonist of the franchise, though having Gamora in there without Star-Lord makes about as much sense as MvC3 having Rocket Raccoon in there without Star-Lord.

Rather, I think what Disney had been doing was blocking particular characters from being in the roster, most notably the X-Men characters and Deadpool. I'll bet without the reciprocation deal between Disney and Sony for use of Spider-Man, he wouldn't have made it in either. This blocking will cease to happen from this point on, with Disney buying 20th Century Fox, which I am certain happened so Disney could use the remaining Marvel franchises in movies. (Fox was the only company remaining that chose to legally cockblock Disney rather than sharing or selling them back.)

It makes sense for the MCU to take priority in which characters are chosen, really, considering the MCU is by far the biggest money maker for Marvel. Don't forget that the roster for MvC3, including Ultimate, was dictated by what Marvel movies had existed and were coming out too. Otherwise, we wouldn't have had characters like Rocket, Doctor Strange, or Ghost Rider, all of which had movies in at least the planning phase at that time. The difference, though, is that characters were allowed in even without movies if they were fan-favorites or had potential for interesting gameplay, like Taskmaster, Shuma-Gorath, and Super-Skrull (who himself had a lot of hate surrounding him for effectively replacing the entire Fantastic Four).

Also, the character design for Infinite was not that great all around, considering it affected the Capcom side too. My impression is that this was a game built by competitive fighting game people and for competitive fighting game people with everything else as either an afterthought or so it can at least pass for a game released on the current-generation systems. To me, it is a case of "running the asylum," in which fans are in control and will take it in whatever weird directions they want regardless of how little they appeal to anyone else.

Carol as Captain Marvel has actually been one of the best things Marvel has done in years. Kelly Sue DeConnicks run was great.
