Wow, this is quite an interesting interview and article I'm reading today. I still remembered when back in 2018 that people asked why sports anime often failed/bombed in the US in the past and I guess it wasn't until Haikyu!! that kind of break that stigma.
Kind of reminds me of the old days when anime/manga used to be weird and nerdy compared to today, ah the old days!!! But I'm glad to see that we came a long way for sports anime/manga to get a bigger audiences outside of the athlete nerd personality that have to keep their nerd hobbies a secret from some of his/her non-nerdy friends. I mean even Marvel Comic's 15-Love (I almost nearly forgot about that series, which is a Marvel Comic attempt to cash in on manga and try to get a small piece of sports manga back in 2011) tried to do this. I hope Marvel can re-print that series given that sports anime/manga has now been fully accepted in the mainstream today compared to 2011. To be honest basketball anime/manga like Slam Dunk, or Kuroko's Basketball doesn't appeal to me compared to baseball anime/manga (yes, I'm a big baseball guy). I would read a baseball comic from DC or Marvel if one of the 2 can make the storyline as good as Ace of the Diamond, Big Windup!, Major, etc... And before you ask... Yes, there was a time when DC Comics did a sports comic, it's called Champion Sports back in 1973: Would I want to see this being brought back for people who read sports manga, that would be kind of nice to see and something I might check out. But I want to see DC and Marvel make a baseball comic that can be just as good as any baseball manga when it comes to a strong storyline/plotline/narrative. So kudo to you for doing this interview. |
