Wow, this is quite an interesting interview and article I'm reading today. I still remembered when back in 2018 that people asked why sports anime often failed/bombed in the US in the past and I guess it wasn't until Haikyu!! that kind of break that stigma.

Lucas, you wrote:
While more obscure subcultures obviously still exist, there's no divide between nerd stuff and “normal” hobbies for anyone middle-aged and under anymore.

When asked if Overtime Elite was conceived as a way to get fans of manga and webcomics into sports media or vice versa, Chen said, “Working with Overtime, the goal was really both. On one hand, some anime fans don't necessarily care about the sports they watch. Sometimes, an anime will convince a viewer to pick up a sport. A good example for me is Haikyuu!!, where I knew nothing about volleyball, but only took an interest after watching the anime. For Overtime, because they have an existing audience, the goal was to create a concept that would resonate with their fans. But, in addition, I know that anime/manga fans can enjoy sports series without actually being a fan of the sport. So, there was certainly a balanced consideration when crafting the narrative.

This idea of fans of a specific media coming together thanks to digital spaces will, of course, sound familiar to anime fans of a certain age. The Western anime fandom benefited tremendously from internet access becoming more common in the late 90s and early 2000s, with many today still viewing it as a mostly online hobby with conventions acting as opportunities for in-person meet-ups. As digital spaces become increasingly present in our everyday lives, it would seem that the anime fandom is not only bleeding into those other spaces but that those other communities are beginning to more closely resemble the structure of the global anime fan community.

Kind of reminds me of the old days when anime/manga used to be weird and nerdy compared to today, ah the old days!!! But I'm glad to see that we came a long way for sports anime/manga to get a bigger audiences outside of the athlete nerd personality that have to keep their nerd hobbies a secret from some of his/her non-nerdy friends. I mean even Marvel Comic's 15-Love (I almost nearly forgot about that series, which is a Marvel Comic attempt to cash in on manga and try to get a small piece of sports manga back in 2011) tried to do this. I hope Marvel can re-print that series given that sports anime/manga has now been fully accepted in the mainstream today compared to 2011.

To be honest basketball anime/manga like Slam Dunk, or Kuroko's Basketball doesn't appeal to me compared to baseball anime/manga (yes, I'm a big baseball guy). I would read a baseball comic from DC or Marvel if one of the 2 can make the storyline as good as Ace of the Diamond, Big Windup!, Major, etc... And before you ask... Yes, there was a time when DC Comics did a sports comic, it's called Champion Sports back in 1973:

Would I want to see this being brought back for people who read sports manga, that would be kind of nice to see and something I might check out. But I want to see DC and Marvel make a baseball comic that can be just as good as any baseball manga when it comes to a strong storyline/plotline/narrative.

So kudo to you for doing this interview.
