Wow. What a terrible holiday season with all this great people passing away and the way it's happening. I hope Mr. Nosaka's family can get through this. Thank you for having an impact on our child/adulthood. RIP.

I hope he was able to find some peace in this life all these decades after his horrible experiences in the war. The fact that he spoiler[killed himself off in Grave of the Fireflies the book is pretty much autobiographical beyond his death) as atonement for surviving when his sister did not] is just so tragic to me.

This is the most ridiculously bad year for anime in general and fans of the pioneers ever really. It's like it's own joke at this point and there's still a couple weeks to go in the year, a lot could happen. Maybe Isao Takahata dies or the entire surviving staff of Ghibli, Gainax and Sunrise all drop dead in their homes 5 minutes before midnight on December 31st.

Akiyuki Nosaka will be remembered favourably for confronting the horror of fire-bombing and surviving. Isao Takahata experienced the bombing of Okayama and also survived.
A few other survivors remain - there was an article in the Japan Times online today about it: http://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2015/12/10/national/history/former-b-29-aviator-meets-survivor-tokyo-firebombing-views-images-devastation/ If you can make the time when visiting Tokyo, visit The Center of the Tokyo Raids and War Damage, Kitasuna 1-5-4, Koto-ku,Tokyo http://www.tokyo-sensai.net/ English: http://www.tokyo-sensai.net/english_page/visitors.html |

Though I never read the book, the movie that Ghibli made based on the book really touched me, brought me to tears a little. RIP

Wow. Sad news but to be expected at some point.
It's interesting to hear that this story was based on a real life experience. Same thing with Barefoot Gen author Keiji Nakazawa. |

This is indeed sad news, and may his soul find peace along with his family that went before him back in the war. I shedd a tear when I read this, but then I shedd more tears for everyone who lived during that terrible time who lost family and loved ones because of battles and atrocities commited by both sides then. Sadly as survivors pass on soon no one will be left to warn the world not to ever make war again. It seems that only those what have never experienced war want to make it.
