Wouldn't it be cool if anime had multiple last episodes with different endings and stuff? Why hasn't anyone ever done this?
[EDIT: Fixed your title to be more specific, edited your opener to make more grammatical sense, and tweaked some spelling. -TK] |

Probably because there isn't much point. One ending will always be the "official" one which aired on TV and the other ones would be a waste of money since they never aired.
I know we get a lot of movies with alternate endings these days, but I think usually those are when the original ending was changed and since they had it anyway they just stuck it on. And of course, when something is based off a manga, the ending is even more "official," unless of course the anime has already deviated from the manga's story which is very common (and often not really appreciated by manga fans). |

Someone from another forum told me that there's gonna be an alternative ending to Rumbling Hearts.. Not too sure about that..

To paraphrase my mother, that just means they're too lazy to pick a single ending. Yes, it's more work to produce, but creatively it's a cop-out.

I'm of the same mindset. I HATE multiple endings. It really takes away from the story. When you have multiple options for an ending you remember it's just some made up story and any power and meaning it may have had over you is broken. The more wishy-washy you get, the weaker the story. |

I sometimes dislike what a series decides to do with an ending, but I can say I agree with the idea that shows should offer alternative endings on any sort of regular basis. In cases where shows are adapting games with multiple paths (like Fate/Stay Night), it would be nice if there were OVAs or something that covered some of the alternate paths.
But otherwise, I'd rather they just have one ending and do those endings well, rather than have multiple endings, which would be silly, IMO.
There is supposed to be another series at some point that will go a different route. It's not unreasonable since its based on a game with numerous outcomes. |

The SPT Layzner OVA is also an alternate take on the last episode of the series. The same goes for the Ideon movie. Although the Zeta movies has small changes throughout the series the ending has a major difference from the series. The problem with this is if there is a sequel, which ending is considered canon.

I want to watch the story the director decided on and hopefully I'll like it. Pick an ending and go with it. If I dont like it, thats too bad. However, I don't want to try several different endings and pick out one I like. Thats just stupid. The ending is part of the Anime for better or worse, just like any other aspect of the Anime.

Gundam Seed Destiny had an alternative ending, but I wouldn't want like ten endings to a series. Multiple endings are great in games, but not in anime.

I've always viewed alternate endings as a way to see "what could've happened" but didn't. The original ending is always THE ending and nothing can change that. Sometimes the alternates are even a bit more nourishing for those of us who came out of the original with some resentment; a personal example of mine is the ending for Neon Genesis Evangelion. The original ending for this series just had me going WTF mate? and I was quite upset. spoiler[I felt like I was watching a philosophical film rather than a piece that would tie off all the loose ends to a great anime.]

Agreed. Multiple endings would just mix up the whole story, and it will alter the true meaning of the story. An ending is an ending because it concludes the story, and if you would create yet another ending, it would definitely blow away what the director or whoever made the story wants to say at the last part. Also, multiple endings just add to all the headache the producers of the show had acquired, and really, it'll be more confusing if you have a lot of endings to choose from. If you want an anime to have multiple endings, you should be the one to create that. |

I just started watching Higurashi a week ago, and I noticed that spoiler[each arc starts and ends differently, it's almost as if every arc has nothing to do with each other.] Does that count?

possibly. Higarashi is strange, it''s like 4 OVAs packed into one anime series.

Speaking of multiple endings, Jetz... what is that? The Melancholy of Osaka Suzumiya... is that supposed to be the special un-aired episode of Azumanga?
