And thankfully it's not one of the films supported by the rightwing psychos who took over the Hugos this year.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/books/booknews/11517920/Hugo-Award-nominations-spark-row-over-diversity-in-sci-fi.html They probably heard it was based upon a book by an Asian and decided it was a communist plot to subvert America. |

Who would have thought the best light novel to film adaptation would star Tom Cruise? Granted they took a lot of liberties with the script, but it worked.

Love how the OP bashes people for not being inclusive and then attacks people because of their political beliefs. But completely ignores the fact that Hiroshi Sakurazaka, the original author, didn't get honored at the Hugo awards. Instead the nomination went to those who made the film.
Anyhow, I didn't like the movie because it was too much a take on Groundhog's Day. |

Meh, EoT was a fine flick and deserved it's nomination, I doubt it'll win anything, but who knows. Original light novel on the other hand was an average sci-fi akin to most of the Black Library (I'd argue that some books from Dan Abnett and Sandy Mitchell are better) and considering there are tons of sci-fi books publishing every year it was destined to not get any.
I'm all for diversity, but not when political correctness means more than actual quality. It's not much better than North Korean propaganda about how Kim Jong-un personally saves USA from hunger. |

Actually the problem with the Hugos this year isn't just that they aren't inclusive, but that they nominated a guy who believes husbands have a right to rape their wives. http://voxday.blogspot.com/2014/05/marital-sex-is-never-rape.html |

It was good enough to be nominated. Thats all that counts.

I actually like the EoT movie and we have to remember that the Japanese rights holders gave their consent for the movie to be made.

It just begs that question of being faithful vs quality, because it takes a lot of liberties with the source material. And yet it's a very good movie, with good special effects, strong acting, and an interesting premise that ends much more decisively than the light novel and manga did. |

Obviously Tom Cruise is a bowl of fruit loops but I generally really like his movies so I can't say that I'm all that surprised. Though, what other light novel movie adaptations have made it out west? |

I'll join in on the chorus. I was shocked by how much I liked the movie as the trailers made it seem like just another dull action flick.

Well nice to see the film got nominated, and I'll say this I did like the film even if it deviate from the source material a bit.

I don't know. The manga was just bad but both the LN and film have their issues separate from one another. The film just goes with the ending it did which makes the entire movie feel pointless in the end but the novel shoehorns a last bit of drama just for the sake of it. Still enjoyed them though, that I cannot deny. |

I fully agree with the Sad Puppies in that acting by the principle that: "The Hugos shouldn't nominate people with [Idea X!]" ...is destructive to the Hugos, no matter what Idea X is. |
