I'm in 8th grade so my only source of income is birthdays, cutting grass, and yardwork. I want to start collecting anime dvds but this is were the problem begins. My parents don't really aprove of me spending $100 + on "cartoons" . So it seems i'm left to buy bootlegs because they less expensive or if i do buy the actual expensive version they'll think i'm a loser and tell me to save my money or spend it on something else. Then, I'm the only person i know who likes anime where I live at (besides my 12th grade neighbors, who i don't talk to much[age difference]) Also, none of the video rental places carry anime other than Pokemon or DBZ or yugioh. So can some one please help me? (if your reading this thank you for listening to my problems, lol,)

Put some money in the bank, and spend the rest on anime.

There isn't any excuse for buying bootlegs. Can't afford the original and can't get it on TV? Wait a few years.

Age difference shouldnt matter all that much if your into the same things. Try hanging out with them if your both into anime. Having older friends can be helpful and useful. I have younger and older friends. They all fit into the chain some how.

When I was growing up, I spent my money on whatever I like (That is, until I got older, and will, "The needs of the many out way the needs of the one."). But if they really don't want you to spend your money on anime, just wait for the prices of them to drop (I just got Revenge of the Nerds for $5 at Wal-Mart, so the prices are dropping.), watch it on TV, stay away from sites that say "All of DBZ on 4 DVDs! $59.99!", talk to the people that run the video joint in getting more anime, and wait for the time where you can spend your own money.

Here's my 2 cents: It's your money to do with as you please (within the law of course )

Since you have extremely limited funds to spend on your anime collection, IMO collect what you can afford, period. Personally in situations like yours I do not condemn purchasing bootlegs. For those of you about to flame me, chill! Everyone has the right to CHOOSE how and when they wish to spend their monies. Ultimately only they know what is right for them.
Sojiro the tenken, please be aware of the fact that bootlegs are lower in overall quality, but they tend to be released a)quicker and b)are more reasonable priced than licensed versions; I for one would not hold it against you for deciding to purchase them. However, also be aware there are alternatives to actually purchasing the anime outright. For example, if you are able to have one of your parents or favorite cousin, aunt or uncle [basically an adult] open a online dvd rental account for you, you can rent titles at your leisure and at a safe economic pace. Meaning, you won't have to rush to buy when you can rent them and at the very least watch them. Saves alot of money over the long haul considering most anime you watch probably won't be titles you want to keep. Second, visit your local public library. Speak to the librarian and investigate the video collection, you will be happy to learn there are quite a few popular anime titles and movies being added. Just recently I investigated my library and found: X the Movie, Lupin III, Ranma tv/movies/ovas, and Rayearth... just to name a few. Also many libraries also carry manga titles translated in English as well as anime magazines too.
Regardless of your decision hang in there and know while it is nice to spend a large amount of your monies on whatever you want at any given moment, it is also helpful to put aside a small amount for future opportunities for larger purchases or emergencies. Good luck and also be aware many high schools (should you still be interested then) do have anime clubs as well. You can meet some interesting people there who share a common interest as yourself.

I'm an 8th grader, but don't feel your money woes. I make 20 a week from allowance, then babysitting, and whatever money i ask for from my mom. Another alternative if you can't buy anime is cartoon network, and tech tv, where you can tape episodes, to have to watch untill you can afford them. And I have friends that are in 11th or 12th grade, and if he likes anime, that's a real good reason to go meet him, i bet if you guys got along he'd let you borrow some of his collection, and that would be a good way to see some stuff, you might not otherwise.

Manga is much cheaper, usually better written, and portable.
Try investing in the manga of series that you like. It's worked for me pretty well.

Try going for those full series bricks companies are releasing these days (Nadesico collection foor example). Those are almost as cheap as bootlegs.

True. Box sets are generally cheaper than bying the individual discs.
Ex. Nadesico = $70
Big O = $35
These series cost far more individually, so boxs are your friends.

I saw the box set of nadesico for $58.00 at best buy
Or you could not buy the boxset and buy one DVD at a time for around $20-23.
That's what I do.
