Maybe this is why some Funimation Titles have mysterously not gotten new Volumes... I Hope Funimation can get their this settled so us Canadians can buy Funimation titles in Stores like Future Shop, I mean new Volumes too not old volumes...

Is there any reason as to why they stopped distributing Funimation DVDs? I don't think someone woke up one morning and said, "Ok, I'm going to stop all distribution of Funimation DVDs for no apparent reason!"

This screws over a lot of people in smaller cities - our Future Shops and Walmarts don't carry a lot of anime, and our comic stores basically all choose Diamond.

My local comic shop informed me about this a couple of weeks ago. I'm not sure it'll make a difference, since FUNi titles (shipped by Diamond) seemed to always make it to them one to four weeks late anyway. It kind of sucks for them though, because as I understand it the new distributor they're using for FUNi titles (not sure who exactly) charges a bit more. I got the impression that they might be losing money on FUNimation titles from here on out, or else that their profit margin on them will disappear, since they don't intend to raise their own selling price.

We've never ordered through Diamond, so it has never been too big of an issue for us. As for FutureShop/Best Buy, they are still pretty selective when it comes to ordering titles from what I know. However, something as big as FMA should not have gone under the radar like that.

A different company, whose name I can't remember, has the exclusive Canadian distribution fulfillment rights.(Could be Koch, but I can't remember) They also don't currently deal with Future Shop/Best Buy, and neither do the distribution companies that they supply to. |

The comic shop I go to stopped ordering videos through Diamond a long time ago. Said they had nothing but problems. If this causes problems for any retailers, I'd have to wonder why rely on what it primarily a comic book distributor for their videos.

I doubt that Diamond had any say in the matter.
In the world of rights, rights are assigned in different markets to different distributors. The same thing happened a few years ago when Manga was distributed (and manufactured) in Canada by Sony Music Video. Diamond was not allowed to distribute product to Canada. For Funimation, the distribution rights are held by Vivendi Universal. They sometimes go by the name 2450 distribution (as Universal's address is 2450 Victoria Park Avenue.) Vivendi is a big name distributor and I suppose that they want to maximize their sales by closing up any loopholes in the distribution channel (Diamond.) Smaller distributor's like SNAP, will be buying from Vivendi. They have to make a profit, so their cost will be higher to stores, and you the consumer will pay a higher price. HMV, Best Buy and Future Shop all buy direct from Vivendi so theoretically you should see better availability in Canada. This will probably not happen. A few bits of info: Best Buy and Future Shop are the SAME store. Best Buy owns Future Shop. CPM and AnimEigo are distributed in Canada by Koch Entertainment. I beg to differ as well, most of my anime comes from Best Buy and while there's always a few volumes that end up strangely hard to find on their shelves, most of the time I can rely on them for my purchases. Actually, most of the time I can get my anime 1 to 2 weeks before the release dates from Best Buy. |
