Veteran Japanese-American actor Mako (Makoto Iwamatsu) passed away on Friday, July 21, 2006, from esophageal cancer at his home in Ventura County, CA. He was 72 years old.

In addition to his groundbreaking work as an Asian-American actor in Hollywood, Mako lent his distinctive raspy voice to such characters as Aku on Samurai Jack and Uncle Iroh on Avatar: The Last Airbender, as well as in numerous cartoon guest-spots on shows such as Scooby-Doo, Dexter's Laboratory, and Duck Dodgers in the 24 1/2th Century.

From toonzone.

I know it's not anime related, but it seemed like something worth posting to me.

How awful! That guy had *the* voice.

Well, I'm sure he will always be remembered. My sympathies.

Dang. First Pat Morita and now Mako. A sad year with these veteran Japanese-American actors passing away Crying or Very sad. I saw Mako in a lot of movies and TV shows in the late 80s and early 90s and liked him a lot. As cheesy as the movie Sidekicks is, I love the sort of parallel character he played in remeniscence to Morita's Mr. Miyagi. I'm gonna' miss them both Crying or Very sad.

Well, I suppose we can say that Jack has finally come to the end of his quest.

Indeed, his voice is irreplaceable. Avatar wont be the same without him. The real kicker is that the day before his death it was announced that he would be playing Splinter in the upcoming TMNT CG movie.

He'll definitely be missed. Crying or Very sad

This sucks! I loved his voice on Samurai Jack. I remember an interview he had on Cartoon Network when SJ was first coming out. I learned my first Japanese word ever when he explained that "Aku" meant evil. RIP Mako. You'll be missed.

Like most people here, I remember Mako for his role as Aku in Samurai Jack. I also remember Mako for his role as Akiro the Wizard in both Conan the Barbarian and Conan the Destroyer. Although I can't recall any other movies where I saw Mako, I know I saw Mako in a few other movies while I was growing up and then while living as an adult.

As I review his list of credits at IMDB.com, I notice that much of his work came in television. All I can say is that when I saw him on screen I knew it was Mako-- he looked as memorable as he sounded.

May he rest in peace. Sad
