Probably not, given my LAPL card probably has been marked with me as an adult for a large number of years now. |

I went to my local library the other day, and I found a huge shelf of Manga. I was so shock I couldn't believe it, a libarian came up to me and said something to the effect that sorry that they didn't have such a great selection but they were going to be ordering a lot more books, and novel.
I was looking through the shelf and found the entire Nausicca set, a bunch of other stories. If was so unbelievable, but then again I am not sure if I will borrow manga from my library. It not that I don't like the Library it more or less has to do with I don't read manga (other than Monster) so I don't have any purpose. But this is a great news for those who don't have the money to spend on Manga, I can't wait to see a library filled with kids reading manga.

I'm from the area, and I'm actually disappointed in the library. Don't get me wrong, I like the fact that there are more titles to choose from, but encouraging kids to read manga instead of "wordy books" may not be the best way to go. Of course, it's just personal. I read EVERYTHING and I don't like to see people JUST read manga.
The reading club from before was better, I think. It's basically the same, except they didn't add "Manga Madness" to it. Is anyone also "from the area" and knows something about the reading club? Because they used to give some books away as prizes...do you think they'll give manga instead?

I think it's a good thing. Libraries work hard to try and get teens in their buildings, and if we offer graphic novels and manga, it's just another reason for some kids to come in.
And I'm still surprised that people don't know about what's in a public library. We have manga, along with Gossip Girls and Cirque du Freak. And if TokyoPop is giving out freebies to the library, then heck yeah, the library should take all they can. jeff a reference librarian |

I think this is a bit naive. I bet most of the kids could care less about all the resources they've just been exposed to. They're there for the manga.

Reading manga can lead to reading regular ol' books. Between manga and Harry Potter, that's what got ME interested in reading again.
Also, teens are by default book-haters. Give them some time to grow up and get back into the reading scene. If they're reading manga now, at least they have a foot in the book, right? |

Reading is reading, no matter how much you say it isn't. Tokyopop is doing a smart thing on their behalf and probably encouraging young adults who never really read manga before to start reading it. I don't know why some of you say that this idea "sucks" and what not, because a manga may not be as wordy as a book, but it's the same exact thing as reading because that's all you do when you get a manga, read.
I'm glad that Tokyopop is partaking in this event and getting more people to read. Good for them. |
