I love ninjas/samurai, especially female ninjas, kicking ass and out smarting the opponent.
Unfortunely it seems finding one in a serious setting is kinda hard. I'm looking for a character in an anime that fits this discription, where she is the main character or almost the main character and the anime has a serious tone, action based with no comedy. Examples: -Main character form Blood: Last Vampire. -Female ninja from ninja scrolls. -Chick from Wrath of the Ninja -.... I've haven't seen every anime out there, so perhaps there are suggestions? The closest I can think of is Flame of Recca it has some comedy, but it's hardly the focal point. She's not the main character but she's part of the main team. Technically she's not a ninja, but her style is close IMO.

I was thinking of Mahiro from Samurai Deeper Kyo myself, but she too is a secondary character not a primary.
Samurai Deeper Kyo is still a good series. You might like it. |

In my anime viewing experience the best female ninja I have come across is Kasumi from Yotoden (aka Wrath of the Ninja). She is extremely powerful, very good looking, the main character of the show (at least in the beginning), definitely a ninja and is very serious about her mastery.
Yotoden is quite an interesting show, and probably up your alley if you are looking for something serious but action-packed. I preferred watching it in the OAV version installments (only available on VHS - out of print) but the movie on DVD is suitable too and doesn't seem to be have any noticable editing when transferred to movie format. |

What about that "Jubei Chan Ninja Girl" anime. I haven't seen it, but the title suggest a female ninja, kunoichi?, is the main character.

Yeah I've seen a few early episodes of Jubei Chan. While I absolutely love the short parts when se switches to the badass ninja chick, I couldn't bear watching anymore of the series due to the comedy/school girl parts which make up 95% of the show.
Also yeah that chick form Wrath of the Ninja, forgot about her, good suggestion, although I have already seen it. Hmm, these other ones sound interesting, I'll do some research on them. Keep em coming! |

Although, it ends abruptly with no conclusion, I was taken aback by the style and fighting in Ninja Cadets. I suggest it for the ninja scenes if you can find it cheap!

Hmm, I'm thinking about picking up Basilisk. As I understand it contains famale ninjas?

Not only is there a female Ninja but it looks well animated, and sounds like it has an interesting story too. I'm definitely going to check it out on DVD. Also you could check out Fate/Stay Night no ninja but it does have several good looking ladies profecient in melee combat.

Basilisk does have female ninjas, and it does have a solid story. Only problem with it is that characters that you become attached to dies too suddenly.

It's hard to tell which part of the "ninja girl" idea you like, but if it's just girls who end up fighting a lot there's a show I just stumbled onto the other day following a lead: Tsukikage Ran. It's short (13 eps), there's quite a bit of tongue in cheek humor in it, and the fight scenes are arguably some of the smoothest I've ever seen in any anime ever for pure martial arts; but if you want the "drama" that goes along with shows like naruto or the like, it probably won't be your cup of tea.
While the girls aren't "ninja", one of them is a samurai and the other is a chinese martial artist who keep accidently meeting until they just agree to travel together. If nothing else it's worth looking up in the archive |
