Yeah, you can guess I don't know much about anime other than what I see on CN but what are OAV series? I'm assuming that their kind of counterparts to TV series to the show, but kind of like a prequal series spread apart on just a few DVDs. Can anyone help me out with this probably easy question?
I've also noticed poeple type OVA in these forums and I was wondering if that's something different or just a typo. |

OVA = original video animation
OAV = original animation video Same thing, really. They both mean shows that have gone directly to video without a TV broadcast or a theatrical release. |

I guess what I said was right, because I see the Kenshin OAV's have something to do with him being the batousi... years before the TV series.

They aren't necessarily sequels or prequels...

Yes, I know the more logical term in English is "Original Animated Video", but I always use the acronym "OVA" simply because I think it looks more elegant...

I always say OAV, vowels together are always more natural than vowel, consonant, vowel. With OAV you say the letters with your mouth open twice and then closed for V, but with OVA it's open, close, open giving it an unatural roll.

You could pronounce it /oh' va/. Though the more rabid otaku would look at you funny.
or you could ject call it an ADTV (animated direct to video), which is what American OAVs are called. |

I like OAV better. OVA just looks kind of weird. OAV looks more like an abreviation.
I understand what they are now. Thanks for that link, Cassandra. I should've searched the site for the Lexicon (I saw it, I just didn't know what Lexicon meant). |

It's kinda weird... when talking I prefer to use OVA (oh-vee-ay) because it sounds better somehow. But when reading/writing, I prefer OAV because it looks more like an acronym and less like a female reproductive cell. Which is the reason why we use OAV in the encyc... it's simply my personal preference

I find OAV more comfortable to pronounce and have thusly adopted it for written media.

Heh... that's actually the reason I like to use OAV over OVA too  Although, some of my friends told me that OAV typically means Original Adult Video for those who are into collecting AV (Japanese Porn).  It could be true or not, I just haven't bothered to validate it...
