hello, I was wondering what people think of anime like Bleach, Naruto, fairy tail, one piece, dragon ball, and a few others(hundreds of episodes). I don't know if I am alone on this but When I watch these shows with exception of the original dragon ball, I feel Like I am watching something that's just not thought through, just scrambled together for a quick profit for (no offense intended) small minded individuals. The only redeeming quality I find is they are great for getting people interested in anime. I my self liked them when I was first watching anime but now when I watch them I just think I want them to send me money for the time I just lost. even fairy tale use to have plot and was enjoyable but now even for the most hardcore fans they cant deny that more then 60% of the show is Filler, and I find its the same for all the very popular 100+ episode shows. if a movie can tell you a full 1200+ page story in 9 hours(EX. lord of the rings) why do these anime's need 33+ hours to tell extensively smaller story's?

I've seen several long series, but this was mostly a result of me starting something that I didn't know was going to drag on so long, and it usually ended in disappointment. Personally, I try to avoid them when I can though, simply because I like smaller, more easily completed, series much more. In the time it takes to watch one of them I could complete 6-12 shorter ones so it hardly seems all that worth it to me. In addition a lot of longer series run themselves into the ground and can't maintain the same amout of quality of story throughout their run.

"Mainstream" is one word, and "anime" is both a singular and plural form.
Moving on, this is a common problem with long series like this. Japanese media is susceptible to many of the same artistic dilemmas that American cinema is, but for slightly different reasons; while the latter tend to simply make bad creative decisions in certain cases (pretty much, just think of the Star Wars franchise in the past three years or so, especially in regard to the EU), the former does that, in addition to incessant filler (because the Japanese apparently don't have the sense to simply air an anime season by season with breaks between finales and premieres to build anticipation, and instead attempt to turn it into a veritable cash cow via useless bullshit), devoting entire arcs to it, or inserting it into the canon in order to pad out an episode for maximum air time over years and years... and years. So, yes, you are correct. This is why I absolutely love Dragon Ball Z Kai, not only because it's so much goddamn easier to watch, but because of the precedent it sets. Unfortunately, too many people got confused, incredulously stating, "Cutting material? OUT OF MY DBZ?!" That being said, watch Kai, DBZ is actually sensible now. As for the rest, fudge 'em, or just skip over the filler. Naruto is a lost cause because it foolishly integrated its filler arcs into its canon plotlines which, while resulting in smoother transitions between arcs, it ultimately ends up making it a pain in the ass to avoid the excrement. One Piece, though, is better about this and is actually pretty enjoyable to marathon when skipping the filler. Just be warned that even the canon arcs tend to drag on for longer than they need to sometimes (motherfucking Skypiea, goddammit), and this cannot always be attributed solely to power-up segments and other annoyances. Frankly, other than the scant filler arcs that it does have, such is One Piece's only major weakness (unless the art turns you off, which is understandable; it's a hit-or-miss with some people). |

my opinion on shows like bleach, is that they have too many filler episodes, which sidetrats from the main plot, which really throws me off anime, unless its anime i rlly like like kanon, CLANNAD and Angel Beats! (probably cos they only contain about 50 episodes in total at most)

I got sick of most of the long shows: Bleach and Naruto. Probably from the filler, but to be honest I am still in love with Fairy Tail. I thought that the others just had the characters stand around so much, stare at each other, have an inner monologue, flashback, have fights drawn out, etc. But I have not really found it to be done as bad by Fairy Tail.

Genres: action, comedy, magic, tournament Themes: magicians It swaps between action and comedy, although each character really has some drama as a flip side. And in a word: "Friends", also kick ass girls. |

About this thread's title: I find myself unable to choke a snarky impulse to note that "mainstream anime" is an oxymoron because anime is very much a niche market. (sorry for the snarkiness; I just could not help myself!)
