How difficult was it for Udon to redo the sprites for SSFII HD? Just curious because I was hoping to see something similar here.

How can they call it an HD port if they're using the same exact sprites from the late 90's? I'm getting real sick and tired of Capcom milking the hell out of their fantastic franchises and running them into ground.

Now there's an oldie but a goodie. But it would be interesting to see an updated port. Guess the only way I could appreciate the series is the OVA. Nah, love this series but those controls are murder.

Capcom would have to spend more money than they want to redo the Darkstalkers graphics in HD and it's just not necessary.

They don't have the original production animation art for the Darkstalkers games... The artwork was scanned and colored in for the CPS-2 arcade system and resampled at a fairly low resolution. The original animation pencil art probably exists in the archives of the original animators, game fans, or has been scattered to the wind and lost/thrown away. Even if Capcom has that art, they would have to spend quite a bit of money to rescan it and recolor it for HD.

They underestimated the timeframe that it would take to redo the graphics for Super Street Fighter II Turbo and that caused that game to be delayed for over a year! The people they hired (Udon) were NOT professional animators and were asked to replicate the basic animation of the original game. Udon also redid the character animation for Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo. That's why the character line art is so clean in the HD remakes... It's not the original pixel art although options exist to use the original game character sprites in both HD remakes..

Taking these factors into account, this is why Marvel Vs Capcom 2 uses filters to sharpen the graphics for HD monitors. For that matter, SNK also uses filters for the PSN/XBL ports of the old Neo Geo arcade system games. If gamers take the time to tweak the graphic settings, the old game look perfectly fine.

For that matter, at 300 X 240 resolution they looked pixelly when they were originally released, too. Never really bothered me much to be honest. The pixelly look was fairly typical for the era and few people bitch about it when they play games in MAME or other emulators. I'm just glad someone thinks the games have enough of an audience for a present-day re-release.

I've always felt the Darkstalkers games were the height of the CPS-2 game history. IMHO, they're superior to both the Street Fighter Alpha series and Marvel fighter games even though I appreciate those series, too. The DS games have the best cast of classic monsters of any fighting game ever developed and crazy amounts of animation and in-game jokes. For whatever reasons, the DS games have never been particularly popular in the West; the second DS game (in particular) was one of the top-earning arcade games in Japan for two years.

Just turn the filters off and set it to 4:3.
That's what I do and Third Strike/MvC Origins look great, IMO.

Definitely picking this up next year. Very Happy

It's a bit of a waste for people like me that already bought Darkstalkers 3 through the Playstation Network since both it and the original DS games were released on the original Playstation. But at least I can now play Darkstalkers 2 as well.
