I can't speak for the English dubs, but I can tell you why the Danish dubs often are listed without characters. This is because most of the dubs in Denmark (at least, the ones for TV series) don't have individual roles listed in the credits. The dub merely credits a list of VAs as Danske stemmer ("Danish voices"). - abunai |

I think it has something to do with the Union. A lot of times, voice credits go by name only, but with no reference to which actor played which character. And other times, some of those VAs will even be listed under different names (a pseudonym), so as to avoid a breach of their labor union contracts. I'm not really an expert, so I might've missed something, but I believe that's what I heard somewhere. |

Hmm, no. Not "two thirds." Crystal Acids is one of many sources of information used by various contributors. But the total quantity of data originating from any one source doesn't come any where near "two thirds" of the dub cast. Looking at a report we have of the sources, Crystal Acids is one of the biggest, but there are no less than 25 sources that have provided over 1000 pieces of information each (but there are over half a million "pieces of information" in the encyclopedia). That being said, the quantity of data that has come from Crystal Acids is by no means insignificant. Looking at the statistics I would honestly place it as the source for about 20% of the english roles listed in the encyclopedia (I don't have a report that tells me what % of a type of information a particular source is responsible for, but I assume 90% of the material from Crystal Acids is Voice Actor information and I compared that to the number of English voice actor roles in the encyc. -- Before looking at the statistics just now I didn't realise it was so high). As for credit, credit is give, when we started the encyclopedia project, one of the first things I required be included was a bibliography. I should update that next chance I get, because there are numerous sites that deserve to be included, but Crystal Acids was added a long time ago. Crystal Acids does a great job of what it does, to be honest it does a better job than the ANN encyclopedia, but I would expect it to do a better job than us, since it is more focussed. -t |

Well, I suppose my perception is somewhat skewed by me mainly keeping track of what interests me, which would be entries for dubs without characters listed with the actors, especially older ones, but still, your number assumes that everyone lists the source accurately, which is especially questionable for all the entries taken before you made including it mandatory. Also, IMDB pretty much took everything listed a while back (it was pretty telling when they one day just suddenly had every single one of the alias links), and has been keeping up ever since, so I wouldn't be surprised if some may have come through them.
I doubt many users are even aware that that page exists.
That's nice, though I'm afraid it doesn't make me particularly less irritated when I see people praise you guys for cast list I know I put together, especially ones that involved tracking down old tapes and digging through my collection for samples of obscure one off voices. Or when, because of comprehensive cast lists like that, people start believing everything that is in the Encyclopedia must be correct, and thus perpetuating things like the obviously bogus Naruto cast as "confirmed". |

Well what do you want them to do have it placed on every single page of the website??? If credit is on the website you need not complain. Of course were going to thank ANN.com for the information. While you may have gotten it, we do appreciate it but we also thank ANN.com for going to sources to get the information for us.They might not of worked as hard as you to get the information but they still gotten it. Also, I'm sure there's other website ANN.com has credited but hardly anyone knows it, what people remembers about information and where it was obtained shouldn't be ANN responsability, as long as ANN has you credited it's up to fans like myself to give the thank you. Also, Like I said in an earlier post if we have to thank ANN.com and then thank you then we are going to have thank everyone all the way back to people who worked on the anime to begin with. So...What do you expect from the people on the forums? Sorry, I might be overstepping my bounds on this post...Guess I find this to be a little annoying and a little too common. |

Nothing I can do about that, it's more visible than the bibliography in any major text book (IMHO).
Actually, I understand exactly how you feel. But such is the nature of the internet & information. I see our data, stuff I know I wrote, plastered all over the place. I also see stuff in Crystal Acids DB that I know I was provided with directly by companies. Does that mean Crystal Acids copied it from us? Nope, It could easilly have been provided to both sites by Viz, and even if it was copied from ANN, such is the nature of the game. What bothers me, is when I see wholesale datamining type copying. Or when sites copy everything, down to the formating. Take a look at this: this and http://www.robertsetiadi.or.id/people/preface.htm and this and this and... I could fill this thread with examples...
Care to elaborate ? That cast list was provided to me by the ADR director, through Viz. I see no reason to believe that it's false. -t |
