My prediction is that Scrapped Princess will be the model for what fantasy anime should look like. The words that Theron wrote in his review is reason enough.
I mentioned it before and I'll say it again: They've been around for only a few short years, but Studio BONES is becoming a very dangerous player in the anime business. Definitely not a biased review, Theron. Basically what I thought all along about the first four episodes of the series. Excellent read!

So far the show just seems medicore at best. Nothing to spectular so far. Hopefully the show will get better in later volumes.

One of the things I found most striking about the dub was Yuri Lowenthal's performances as Leo. It's rare that I get the feeling of an actor falling completely into their role from the get go, so I was quite impressed with that. I wasn't completely comfortable with Kari Wahlgren's performance, but I have to agree, it's a solid dub.
It will get better - believe me, there is much more going on behind the scenes than one might think. |

Theron, I'm a bit confused about your comments pertaining to the dub performance of Michelle Ruff:
What exactly do you mean that Ms. Ruff didn't "hit the right tone" with Winia. From what I've watched so far in the series, Winia is supposed to be a gloomy character, not spunky and charismatic like Pacifica. I think she's doing an excellent job capturing Winia's gloomy mood. |

You know, if it weren't for that stupid show with the ninjas, this would arguably be the best release of 2005. Hmm. Other female character with odd hair...you aren't talking about the chick with glasses who shows up in the middle of the series, are you? She was cute. Anyway, one of the best things about Scrapped Princess is that just about everything that happens will tie together in the end. Even the very first establishing shot in the very first episode will make sense. However, you have to watch to the end. I know I am (again). |

I heard that this was a very good series, but I was also partly influenced to pick it up because of the "limited edition" figurine. Otherwise, I wouldn't have picked it up without at least an artbox or "limited edition" item to go with the first volume. The first episode sets things up very nicely and has already got me very interested to see how things turn out in the end.

I too normally like Michelle Ruff's performance, but I'm not buying her as Winia. The performance was not gloomy, but flat. I had the same impression when she played Aoi Sakuraba. Maybe it's just coincidence, but could it be that hearing a good performance by Ayako Kawasumi first colors my impression?
Scrapped Princess is a great series, but first time viewers are definitely in for a surprise at how the fantasy setting gets developed. In retrospect, I find hints of it already in just the first 4 episodes covered in this volume. I was hoping to get Bridget Hoffman (my favorite dub actress) for Raquel and lo and behold, yay! But I think Pacifica was mis-cast. I think Melissa Charles (my second favorite) would have made a better choice. I haven't heard her in newer shows. I wonder if she's moved on to other endeavors. These minor things aside, Crispin Freeman's script is really good and most of the performances are too. |

I agree. I think Crispin Freeman is doing an excellent job with the ADR work, and he's not a bad VA either - one of my favorites.

khryoleoz mentioned her as being flat, but I think it would be more accurate to say that her performance was inconsistent. Too sharp in places, too flat in others. (And I did like her as Aoi, but she just doesn't work for me here.)
You mean Eirote? No, I liked her design. I'm referring to the one in the Obstinate Arrow with the red hair - I forget her name. And I agree that Melissa Charles would have been a respectable alternate choice for Pacifica. But I can live with this one. |

I picked up Vol. 1 of "Scrapped Princess" the day it got released, I was looking forward on watching this series for quite a while.
The first 4 episodes were quite entertaining, and Yuri Lowenthal as Leo was perfect, his first introduction was great and so funny.
Of course the whole cast was perfect, especially Crispin Freeman and Steve Staley, two personal favorites of mine. I can only recommend this. |

I completely agree with you. Although, I kind of expected him to be quite good actually, ever since I saw his performance as Haru Glory in "Rave Master” I had no doubt. Of course I also knew him from many video games, like "Prince of Persia: SOT" as the Prince. I thought he did an excellent job. |

She's a sufficiently minor character that it's pretty much irrelevent. I know she had a name somewhere, but with the exceptions of Chris and the Baroness, most of the Obstinate Arrow are just kind of there in minor roles that amount to "killing stuff". |

Lowenthal sounds like one of my friends from anime club who always shouted "HUZZAH!" That, in itself, is awesome. I hope he gets considered for a role in Tsubasa Chronicle when/if it comes over. Oh, and something of substance to add: Scrapped Princess is unique for the RPG-fantasy genre in that most shows have the characters on a quest to something or someplace. Scra-Prin, if anything, is the exact opposite. |

Even though I am going to buy the special edition DVD boxsets, the box itself seems rather cheap and flimsy.

Well, this packaging isn't for really anything more than showcasing the figure before it's bought... IMO. An actual artbox to hold the DVD's will likely come later. |
