Well its hard to say, tokyop pop has more of the series manga that are not shunen mean while grasping mature titles and unknowns also having alot of shojo, while giving fans a magazine for they're stuff to get published. while Viz has alot of Shonen based ones and few mature titles. My votes with Tokyo Pop.

Most people would think of VIZ as having more action titles thanks to Shonen Jump. TOKYOPOP seems like it would have more romance titles. But, that's just coming from their most popular manga.

I vote for Tokypop at least in the romance genre. I guess I almost prefer them over Viz now. They've got more mature titles like Laruto said.

I think Tokyopop has more different titles to choose from. They don't have the titles spread too thin like Viz with their divisions which is why I like Tokyopop more. They didn't tell me this was shojo and I shouldn't read it because I'm a guy. Not to mention the Viz's quality of print has really deterioted lately. Most of my Shonen Jump titles are just falling apart due to a lack of quality production.

Thats another good point, Tokyopop does have a more diversed array of mangas. I haven't found that much going on with Viz lately.I dont buy that much Viz anymore. Other thatn Ruroni Kenshin and a few other titles.

If by "diversed" you mean saturating the market with any sack of horseshit that can be called manga, then I'd agree with you.

I was about to say! I mean, Sturgeon's Law still holds, and 90% of a hundred titles is a different thing entirely from 90% of twenty...but the basic argument is pretty much irrelevant. When I buy a manga, I pay for the story and the art, not what publisher's name is on the spine.
If a completely unknown company I've never heard about comes out and licenses, say, Spiral (not the Viz Spiral, rather the Spiral the anime is based on), I'm not going to care exactly what that company is, I'll just whip out my wallet.
And similarly, come on, do you actually care for what company publishes the non-manga books you buy? Why should manga be any different?

Well i'm a fairly new manga/anime collector (4-5 months) but i think tokyo pop is better in that they have more/ better titles like samurai depper kyo, keroro gunso, .hack//legend of twilight. But in respect to my roots, viz did introduce me to anime with DBZ (so many years ago) and continues to bring new fans with yu-gi-oh, shaman king and one piece airing during popular cartoon blocks. Most importantly for VIZ though, THEY HAVE NARUTO!!!!!!! They're cheaper too.

Personally it really doesn't matter what publisher it is. If they have the series I want, I'll swallow my pride and buy it even I hate the company. **coughs at Tokyopop**

The real answer is Dark Horse, but I digress.
Quite honestly, I don't get people's beef with Tokyopop. Unlike Viz, they don't have a Japanese sugar daddy spoonfeeding them hot licenses and they haven't been living off of a steady diet of Rumiko Takahashi drek for the past decade.
Tokyopop has to take chances. Think about some of the risks they've taken that have paid off (Mars, Paradise Kiss, Rebirth, Priest, Wish, Fruits Basket, even Initial D). What's more, Tokyopop operates on a skin-of-their-teeth budget, which means even when there is a top shelf title that Viz hasn't already whored their way into, they can't necessarily afford it.
Not to mention a good 2/3rds or so of Viz's "Good Stuff" is stuff that's been in their catalog for years like Fushigi Yugi, Ranma 1/2, Maison Ikkoku, and Rurouni Kenshin. It's just that now because Tokyopop took the $10 gamble, Viz has chosen to rerelease their good stuff at the same size and price.
And, of course, reap the benefits of much more visible manga store space - again a boon to the industry Tokyopop brought us.
Tokyopop took a few low dollar licenses (save for Love Hina and Initial D, which were what they blew their licensing wad on) and turned the whole manga market on its ear, forcing the old school companies (Viz and Dark Horse) to heavily rethink their pricing and release methods. Dark Horse is still as expensive as ever, but it's still the very best you can get. Viz is still Viz, they're just a better priced Viz.
Besides, isn't there anyone besides me who's grateful to see some non-mainstream titles like Wish licensed and released?

Craeyst Raygal--
I'll speak upon by own behalf about my ever-so-long hatred towards Tokyopop.
1) Graphic design: I rate this number one on my list. I was never too pleased about that corny border strip on the side. Call me picking, but it's a poor type of graphic design. It takes up too much space and to add to it, each volume is plagued with that logo spam on the cover. Plus, using cropped panels as a cover design is really cheap. It came with cover art in the first place. If they are planning to have panels on the cover, it's best placed on the back with the summary. Also, they just use random color palettes (probably from "The Color Index" book found in bookstores everywhere) instead of carefully analyzing the structure of the design and whether the colors suit it. In addition, whatever manga which they created a logo design for has little concept behind it. It's more like they just know fonts and know how to tweek them in Illustrator in like 30 minutes. **coughs at Gravitation logo**
2) Comic book typography: I don't know about you, but I would like to be able to read my comics without getting an eyesore. Sometimes some fonts aren't meant for publishing in small formats. Unfortunately Tokyopop does it anyway. If people can't read what you are making, then what's the point. I might as well read the original. It's going to be the same anyway.
3) Advertisement: Is it just me or does Tokyopop is really trying to get in your face and make you buy their books? Having 2-4 ads in a book is one thing, but once it becomes 6-8, that's just pushing it. It's already bad enough I got this ugly-ass logo almost everywhere which also seems rather out of place to begin with. Just give me my comic book.
4) Quality: Unlike other books done by Viz and Del Rey and even ADV, Tokyopop really gives you the short end of the stick with low-grade covers which most of them aren't even glossy and highly duriable and pages with cheap paper at a high price. Plus, when the panels get printed, some of off them are off-the-page. Sometimes the artwork is dithered depending on the series.
5) Translation: There are some flaws in their translations including typos. (Spellcheck anyone?) If I remember correctly, Initial D has a few of them. Also, it would be nice if the SFX were translated too instead of the dialogue alone.
So in other words, it's not the series they have that make me hate them or like them, it's what they do to them is my concern.

So, basically what you're trying to tell me is that the reason you don't like them isn't because they license bad titles, or because they have a poor track record of customer service, or because they snub fandom in order to make a quick buck....
...but it's because the cover's aren't pretty enough, the type isn't big enough, and because some titles have typos.
Well, sorry to say it, but I'd rather every dime that goes to the company = a dime used to bring more manga (and more diverse manga) to the States. I don't want them paying some art school hack to "analyze" the cover art. All a cover needs is a picture related to the story that induces the interest of the intended reader (i.e. car racing story = dramatic "speed shot" of cars) and the title in legible but story mood related print.
It's like a sandwich. Do you want bavarian honey ham and lace swiss on regular wheat? Or do you want regular cooked ham and processed swiss on sesame rye?
Give me the meat and cheese, spare me the bread.
