See, like I said earlier, Rapunzel seems to have legs.

90k for combined DVD/BD is actually pretty dang low for a recent Disney movie.
Look at Gundam Unicorn for instance. It's going to have a lot more "legs" than Tangled, Then you have to take into account how much cheaper Tangled is than "otaku" shows, and you'll realize that a single volume of Madoka Magica (out of 6) results in more yen than Tangled 90k * 4000 yen = 360 million yen for Tangled 75k * 7000 yen = 525 million yen for PMMM vol. 1 Hell, that's almost 50% more yen |

He tries to argue Rapunzel being better than anime in every topic, don't worry about it.

I know. I just wanted him to shut up, and so I had to get the facts/sales numbers out.

No, I'm pointing it out because regular Japanese people, not otaku, tend to buy Disney films like Rapunzel, but regular Japanese people, unlike otaku, tend not to buy Blu-rays (even if it's not as expensive as anime Blu-rays). Yet here we are, with regular Japanese people buying Blu-rays of Rapunzel, so they must have liked it enough to buy the Blu-rays instead of the DVDs as regular Japanese people usually do. And you know it's regular Japanese people buying it since, unlike typical otaku anime which sells 90% of its total sales in the first week, Rapunzel is showing some legs, figuratively. Now ya guys know the context.
(Oh, BTW, just as a heads up, I'd also keep harping about Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides somehow being far-and-away the #1 movie of the year in Japan and #1 for 6 out of 7 weeks, including 5 straight weeks --and I didn't like that movie-- something about Japanese strange obsessions with sea pirates. )
This is actually pretty good for a non-Pixar Disney film, particularly on Blu-ray (albeit Blu-ray/DVD combo, but still a bit more expensive than just DVDs that regular Japanese people usually get). Last edited by enurtsol on Wed Aug 10, 2011 12:46 am; edited 1 time in total |

Did you even read the chart?
It's DVD/BD. There is no DVD-only release. |

Hmmm.... you may be right....... Come to think of it, I don't recall a Disney announcement in animation forums about a separate Japanese DVD release date (at least as of yet - it's bound to happen eventually, as it's Disney). That may explain the spike in Blu-ray/DVDs - though the combo still does cost a bit more than the usual DVD-only. Some regular Japanese people may just not be willing to wait for the DVD-only release. That does skew my analysis a bit, though it still shows that they're willing to buy it, even for a bit more cost and earlier than usual....... You've given me a bit more perspective to consider......... |
