Excuse if this is not the correct forum or not the correct type of show, but i do not know where else to put this.
I have just watched the German release (2010) of Shonen Sarutobi Sasuke, in the USA known as Magic Boy, released in 1959. A link to this DVD release can be found here; beware: it is in German. On this films is a bonus movie: Princess Kuro, basrd on a Japanese legend. This movie lasts about 45 minutes and is made using marionettes, thus puppetry, not real animation. Based on the quality of the film it is made in the 1950s-early 1960s. Some screen shots can be seen on supplied web page. I have searched the Internet, as wells as this site, but cannot find much information on this movie. Does any one knows more details on this? |

This probably should be in the the Anime forum.
The Anime Encyclopedia, Revised & Expanded Edition: A Guide to Japanese Animation Since 1917 has an entry on "Puppetry and Stop-Motion" (pp. 513–515), but it does not mention Princess Kuro (note that there is a hentai OAV series, Kurohime: Shikoku no Yakata, also known in English as Black Widow). However, most of the puppetry references are apparently taken from The Dorama Encyclopedia: A Guide to Japanese TV Drama Since 1953, so you may have better luck in that book. |

I found this: Kurohime Monogatari (黒姫物語) Director: Miyoji Ieki (家城 巳代治) Original Creator: Takuo Segawa (瀬川 拓男) Screenplay: Yūsaku Yamagata (山形 雄策), Takuo Segawa Director of Photography: Shunichirō Nakao (中尾 駿一郎) Hiroko Suzuki as Kurohime I can't find the exact date of this puppet movie (61 minutes long), but according to the Japanese Wikipedia page of Takuo Segawa he produced it around 1966-67; a 2ch thread mentioned Hiroko Suzuki voiced the role in 1967. |

I do not think so. Unless the differences between animation (hand draw or stop-motion) and puppetry (handheld or marionets) is not a real distinction on this site. But I do not want to discuss this movie, in fact it is more like a TV special. I want more information on it. @dormcat: Unfortunately, the links you provide do not point to the same movie; perhaps another version of the story. And about a voice cast I do not know; the version on the DVD was an adaptation for the German television. I may have been to hasty to put this on the forum. The only thing I can add are the name of the director, Susumi Yasue, and the screenwriter, Yoshiyuki Fukuda, as they are mention in the closing titles on the DVD. Searching the web on those names does not have any results in regards to this movie, unfortunately. |

Probably that is Kurohime Monogatari which was broadcast on NHK in 1967. The puppeteers were the Takeda Puppet Theatre, which was led by Takeda Kinosuke. Yasue Susumu produced puppet shows for NHK. This Kurohime Monogatari was awarded a Munich International TV programme Award. |

Very valuable information indeed! It has been mentioned in Takeda's official page under the City of Iida, but there's no picture of it there. The only image I found of Kurohime Monogatari by Takeda Puppet Theatre is in the museum, titled "young servant and deer of/from Kurohime Monogatari" (黒姫物語の若侍と鹿): .jpg)

Yes, since the Takeda Puppet Theatre virtually halted its activities after Takeda Kinosuke had passed away, it remains only as the museum, which Iida City set up. (Takenoko-kai, which is the Takeda Puppet Theatre's sister group, attended 雲林國際偶戲節 International Yúnlín Puppet Theater Festival in Taiwan in 2010, though.) http://www.minapo.jp/www/blog/detail.jsp?article=383
Well, I'm sorry to say this, but, though the word 'samurai' is derived from 'さぶらふ' (to serve), the Japanese term '若侍' is interpreted as 'young warrior/samurai'. I can understand that a native user of Chinese thinks of 'to serve' or 'servant' when he has seen the kanji '侍', though.

I can see all of them just fine, though some of them are oddly bolded (黃, 漢, 戶, 者, 歷, et al.). Perhaps it's the character encoding your browser is using (I have UTF-8, Shift_JIS, EUC-JP, ISO-2022-JP, and Chinese Simplified GB2312 active)? Edit: UTF-8 is the one that works for me for this page. |

Hmm...like doc-watson42, I, too, can see all of them. Since the quoted texts are old and scholarly ones, they include 正字. It is possible that a PC cannot deal with some 正字 for some reason. Does your computer have a recent version of a Japanese fount? |
