I wonder if Funi will do what they've done in the past with series like this. Bring back the main cast and recast the rest? Or will it entail entirely new actors?
Only time will tell.
Hopefully we'll see an interesting campaign for it.

Can't say I'm surprised about this at all, though I hope/assume there'll be simulcasts for it.
It's looking more like a "set in same world" series than a direct sequel to the 2003, so maybe Funi can get away with minimal recasting in a Texas dub. Getting the original California cast would be great, but we all know it won't be easy or cheap to pull off.

Sweet, always good to see a show I was interested in licensed.

According to the website (the Japanese one for the show, not Funi's) there are a few characters (I think three so far) from the original show coming back but it looks like it's been a few years so they probably could get away with recasting if they really had to.
Anyway, was expecting this after one of the guys on ANNCast mentioned that it was Funi who contacted them about showing the new show (and since Funi seems to get along well with Gonzo and because they're re-releasing the show under the Classic line which seems to indicate the show sold well) but yay for confirmation. And good lord, that contest thread on their forums is lagging so much now, really want to win one of those prize packs too...

I hope Dio is a prominent character in this series.

"Steaming, home video rights licensed for new TV series with world premiere at Anime Expo in July"
Sounds kinky.

Just in case: there's a new character design for him on the cast page on the Japanese website so fingers crossed!

Meh....exciting news to some but not to me. I couldn't get into Last Exile. I gave it 3 episodes but it wasn't grabbing me.
I'm happy for those who are excited about this, yet I was expecting something more from this "Big news announcement".

The original series has one of the best opening theme I have ever heard! Really great artwork. I love my Avis figure from the series.. It's one of my favorites figures. I really look forward to the new Last Exile

I haven't seen the first series yet, but based on a trailer, it looked good visually and seemed to have an intriguing story. I've had it on my list since Funimation announced they were releasing a blu-ray version (which originally was supposed to come out this June, but seems to have been delayed until November, based on the date posted on amazon.com). It was the trailer for Fam, The Silver Wing that sparked my interest in the original series and I'm looking forward to the new series, as well.

Awesome news---thanks, Funimation!!!
This seems like the kind of announcement they usually hold for Anime Expo; I wonder what they've got in store for that now?

My sentiments exactly. I'll probably at least stream this, since I enjoyed the original series, but I guess I got my hopes up for something else when they said "Big news announcement" on there Facebook.
