Gosick
ANN wrote:
Plot Summary: GOSICK takes place in 1924 in a small, made-up European country of Sauville. The story centers on Kazuya Kujo, the third son of a Japanese Imperial soldier, who is a transfer student to St. Marguerite Academy, where urban legends and horror stories are all the rage. There he meets Victorique, a mysterious yet beautiful and brilliant girl who never comes to class and spends her days reading the entire content of the library or solving mysteries that even detectives can't solve.

Available at Crunchyroll.

As the new Bones show, I, of course, already had my expectations for it, since as of now Bones stands as my favorite studio.
I can see its potential. The two main protagonists are quite likable. The detective wasn't bad either.

The first episode made Victorique adorable. I wonder how many will call this moe/lolicon, and discard it on the spot.

As for my expectations, so far I'm not sure. I do expect something good, but the elements have yet to settle. I haven't read about it, but it looks like it will work in arcs rather than stand alone episodes or ongoing main plot. Which isn't bad since that seems to be Bones' specialty.

By the way, it's good to hear Hei/Tenma's VA on a new project. Thanks a bunch Bones!

Seems like it could be interesting. BONES has yet to produce a bad series, so I know this will get better as it goes along. Both protaginist seem like they could be interesting, though I'm already curious about Victorique...

Show's got some good potential. And I do so love a good mystery series.

Yuuki Aoi's voice alone is enough for me to watch. She's using the same voice as Mina Tepes in Dance in the Vampire Bund. So awesome. Very Happy

I haven't watched the first episode yet as I do not have a Premium Membership on CrunchyRoll, but I have some expectations from this show. I lowered them a bit, though. I'm expecting some decent mysteries and horror from this. Also, after watching the first 2 minutes, it seems to have a rather nice opening. Not to mention the first scene seems to give it a nice "horror" feeling.

Victorique is quite cute! Wink

I enjoyed it and I'm curious to see which direction they go with it. Bones? Check. Goth? Check. Loli? Check. Early 1900s Europe? Check. Hair which defies gravity itself? Check. As long as it doesn't turn into a mystery-of-the-week show, I'm on board! The only nitpick I have is that giving Victorica a pipe when she's thinking is just kinda... silly.

Agreed. You can hear a bit of Murasaki in there too except without the prim & proper dialect.

That has to be the dumbest murder mystery case I've ever read/seen. spoiler[Why would a maid have a pistol? Why? It makes no sense whatsoever. It was clear as day that she was the murderer because maids do not carry pistols. They carry brooms.]

I hate the male protagonist because he has no good qualities to him and is in every sense of the word a generic buttmonkey. Not to mention all the kids were scared of him for no good reason... what the heck? At least when all the schoolkids were scared of Ryuuji in Toradora it was explained it was because of his appearance, whereas this kid is a complete bore and looks like every other boring shounen protagonist out there.

Well, I'll give it 2 more episodes before dropping it.

It was most likely the family/household gun. In England at the show's point in time, such a thing was much more common and firearms were more culturally ingrained. Maybe it was even displayed above the mantle. The country's real gun laws didn't start until the 1920's, and until 1903 even children could buy guns (really! The first UK law to mention an age restriction for the sale of firearms was the Pistols Act 1903).

It reminds me of the classic Western Mansion setting in Umineko, where when something goes wrong the sibling's first reaction is to "get Father's guns."

This was explained in the episode itself when they mentioned the "spring-time reaper," but:

Quote:
"Reaper" was a nickname Kazuya would rather do without. Most students here had an insatiable love for horror stories, and the sheer age of the school had allowed it to accumulate more than its fair share of legends and beliefs, such as "the traveler who comes in the spring brings death with him" or "a devil lives in the thirteenth stair."
Because Kazuya Kujo was a black-haired, black-eyed Asian traveler who rarely spoke, he'd quickly been identified as "the traveler who comes in spring." The students who knew the adage avoided Kazuya as much as possible. He wasn't sure how many of them really believed in it, but they were all on board, as if they'd agreed that this would make the game all the more entertaining.

Thanks for the explanation on the nickname. Unfortunately the nickname made me think that the protagonist would be interesting, so the clash between the name "Kuroi Shinigami" and the weak, pale, pussy, otaku-insert, etc. main character we got really made me dislike the show. I assume you read the light novels, right? Does this protagonist get less buttmonkey and actually do stuff like Yuuji in Shana or does he remain the same?

I rather liked this one. I've always seen at least a bit of appeal to the Goth loli character, and this one definitely seems like it's at least trying to do something different.

Granted, the murder situation was a bit dumb. But I liked how it didn't end up being just a one-episode "solve the crime and move on" deal. Clearly it's just the first piece of a bigger puzzle, and that and Victorique are likely to have me hooked for the season.

Now, come on. Yuuji was a complete coward at first. This guy at least had the guts to go back upstairs, and the courage to face the detective who took her credit. How many "pussy" bland leads usually do that right off the bat?
If you think that's bad you should have seen Occult Academy.

The crime itself was dumb. But who here was smart enough to figure out how it worked before she said?
During the brief description, the detective did mention the maid screaming something no one else understood.
In other words, figuring out who the culprit was wasn't the mystery (as that detective seems to be portrayed as dumb... but even our heroine figured it straight away, which is a sign that the series itself knew it was an easy case to solve), but rather how it happened. How it happens is definitely the juice of any detective mystery.

For a first episode it was excellent. It introduced a bit of the characters, and a case which seems to be the tip of the iceberg.

I thought so as well, but when she did Mina it was apparent she tried to sound adult with that voice, which isn't the case here.

Alright, just watched the first episode, and I really enjoyed it. Sure, it wasn't great for a mystery, it did serve as a good introduction to the characters and shows its genre. The whole mystery thing was fast paced so I didn't have time to think about it. I'm looking forward the cases it will present as, and the first episode actually gave me more hype for the next episodes.

That said, Victorique has... Captured my heart. She's just so damn cute! No, not because she's a loli goth, or whatever, but I found her personality cute. spoiler[Rolling on the floor because of boredom, bringing unnecessary things for a yacht trip.] I also found Kazuya likable, though there seems to be nothing special about him besides the rumors that surround him.

Who here was smart enough to figure out that the pistol shown in the explanation was an anachronism and that regardless, spoiler[there is no way a pistol from the 1920s could have a bullet fire clean through the keyhole... and how exactly does that unlock the door?]

You tell me. In the 20s we were a couple decades away from creating a bomb capable of destroying an entire city. What I do know is that the keyholes back then were a lot bigger. And since when does our world have girls with supernatural powers?
Yeah, basing it on reality is easy and convenient.

It's just common knowledge that fictional doors do open if you shoot it.

Talk about nitpicking.

Who has supernatural powers?
