Shonen Sunday's 1st Editor Kiichi Toyoda Passes Away

Toyoda served as editor-in-chief for magazine's launch issue in 1959
Kiichi Toyoda, the very first editor-in-chief of Shogakugan's Weekly Shonen Sunday magazine, passed away last Thursday, January 10 due to acute heart failure. He was 87. A service was held for close family and friends. The chief mourner at the funeral was his eldest son, Shinobu.
In 1959, the inaugural issue (pictured right) of Weekly Shonen Sunday debuted with Toyoda as its editor-in-chief. He was promoted to editorial director at Shogakukan in 1968, and retired in 1984. As an authority on copyrights, he headed the Japan Uni Copyright Center after leaving Shogakukan.
