On March 6, Hokkaido police arrested a 22-year-old university student in Kurume City, Fukuoka on suspicion of selling pirated anime via online message boards. The man allegedly admitted his guilt in custody.
According to the authorities, between April 19 and June 5 of last year, the man sold 31 DVD-Rs that held unauthorized reproductions of anime titles including Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team, Dragon Ball GT, and Detective Conan: The Lost Ship in The Sky for 13,500 yen (about US$165) to three individuals, including a man from Sapporo. The man admitted to downloading files via file-sharing software and creating pirated discs in order to sell for pocket money. The police suspect that the man's sales of the discs from February 2011 to his arrest made him at least 1 million yen (about US$12,100).
