Comic Market Matches Attendance Record Set Last Summer
posted on by Egan Loo
Comic Market 78, Japan's largest manga event, ended at the Tokyo Big Sight center on Sunday with an overall turnstile attendance of 560,000. 560,000 was also the all-time record set during last summer's Comic Market 76 event. 170,000 people came on Friday, 190,000 came on Saturday, and 200,000 came on Sunday. The next Comic Market will run from December 29 to 31, and organizers anticipate a turnstile attendance of 510,000. Comic Market has no admission fee or ticketing.
Japan Expo, Europe's largest convention devoted to Japanese popular culture, estimated that 180,000 unique attendees came to this year's event. 140,000 unique attendees went to last year's Comic-Con International, the largest popular-culture convention in North America. Anime Expo, the largest anime convention in North America, had a turnstile attendance of over 109,000 last year with 44,000 unique attendees. Anime Expo reported a turnstile attendance of over 105,000 this year.
"Turnstile attendance" is the number of attendees on each day added together, so a person who uses a four-day pass is counted four times. "Unique attendees" is the number of attendees regardless of how many days they attend, so a person who uses a four-day pass is counted once.
