5th Precure Film Greenlit, Versailles Still in Planning
posted on by Egan Loo
Japan's Toei Animation has revealed during its January 28 midterm earnings announcement that the fifth Precure movie has been greenlit. The company also confirmed that the Rose of Versailles movie is still in pre-production development, and that it is planning its first computer graphics project.
The fifth Precure television series, Yes! Precure 5 GoGo!, has already been announced for a February premiere. The fourth Precure movie became the 8th top-grossing anime movie of 2007 in Japan after opening in November.
Toei Animation previewed pilot footage of the second animated Rose of Versailles film remake at the Tokyo International Anime Fair last January. However, it has since said that the film has not been set for a particular date yet. Riyoko Ikeda's original 1972-1973 manga was previously made into a 1974 stage musical by the Takarazuka Revue (a troupe famous for its all-female performers), a 1978 live-action film with European actors, a 1979-1980 television series, and an earlier 1990 animated film.
The details of Toei Animation's first computer graphics project has yet to be announced, but it is expected to inaugurate Toei's third lineup of theatrical anime. The first and second lineups are movie spinoffs from television series (such as the Precure movies) and original feature films (such as The Rose of Versailles remakes), respectively. The company has been using computer-aided coloring and digital compositing to reduce its dependency on physical cels and paints in its 2D animation projects for over a decade.
