Ghibli Releases

posted on by Christopher Macdonald
Preliminary date for Sen to Chihiro in theatres, and future DVD plans.

At the Q&A sessions at this weekend's North American premier of Spirited Away (Sen to Chihiro), attended by Steve Alpert (Tokuma), Toshio Suzuki (Ghibli) and John
Lasseter (Pixar) fans were informed of a preliminary date for the beginning of a North American theatrical run for Spirited Away; September 20th, 2002. It was said that both subtitled and dubbed prints would be made available.

Also mentionned were future DVD release plans for other Ghibli titles. They said that two Ghibli films would be released on DVD in 2002 and three or four more in 2003. The primary reason for the delays was given, and as suspected it was in order to allow the titles to be released in Japan and sell for a while in order to avoid reverse importation due to the lower North American DVD prices. All DVDs will be released with Japanese audio (with English subs) and English audio if a dub has been produced. Apparrently prefers to do the authoring for all the R1 DVDs themselves in Japan.

Buena Vista Home Entertainment (A Subsisiary of Disney) owns the North American rights to the following Ghibli titles:

Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi (Spirited Away)
Tonari no Yamada-kun (My Neighbors the Yamadas)
Mononoke Hime (Princess Mononoke)
Majo no Takkyūbin (Kiki's Delivery Service)
Tenkuu no Shiro Rapyuta (Castle in the Sky)
Tonari no Totoro (My Neighbor Totoro)
Kaze no Tani no Nausicaä (Nausicaä of the Valley of Wind)
Omohide Poro-Poro (Only Yesterday)
Kurenai no Buta (Porco Rosso)
Heisei Tanuki Gassen Pom Poko (Pom Poko)
Mimi wo Sumaseba (Whisper of the Heart)
