Nanoha Takamachi is a young Japanese girl attending school like anyone else. But her normal, everyday life suddenly comes to an end when she rescues an injured ferret. The ferret's name is Yuno, and it reveals himself to be a young shape-shifting mage. An archaeologist from a parallel universe, Yuno claims to have come to Earth to collect a set of 21 dangerous ancient artifacts called the "Jewel Seeds."
The Jewel Seeds give those who come in contact with them power, often turning them into monsters, and Yuno was injured while trying to collect them. Now Yuno must rely on Nanoha while he convalesces in ferret form.
He gives Nanoha a magic wand, and she unexpectedly shows strong aptitude for magic. As the two gather the Jewels Seeds, Nanoha learns magic from Yuno while continuing with her "ordinary, everyday life."
