This manga served as the loose basis of the original Kamen Rider television series, representing Shotaro Ishinomori's ideal version of the story. However, Toei made Ishinomori change key elements, feeling that the character was too dark and gruesome for a children's show. As a result, Kamen Rider shares Skull Man's origin as an ordinary person turned into a cyborg by a criminal organization, but is an honest and selfless hero as opposed to a violent anti-hero.
