Utawarerumono is based on a game that is part eroge and part tactics RPG

In the game, Dori and Gura are both boys who everyone, including Hakuoro, mistakes for girls. The anime never makes this distinction though the voice actors claims that this is also the case in the anime.

ADV Films paid $109,201 to license the series in 2006.
