At least the linked page I gave somewhat of a hint as to what it's about.

Oh, I was wondering who Darth Vadar is--I thought it was a pseudonym for someone who changed one letter to avoid getting in trouble with LucasFilm.

"Star Wars: Samurai Edition."
![]() It would be interesting if there were a movie of Star Wars that somehow based on Feudal Japan. It would give Darth Vader a chance to showcase his latent samurai traits. |

I think some people on this website may be slightly confused about the "Star Wars" films. The original "Star Wars" was a remake of a samurai film,albeit done with a sci-fi sheen. Many of the helmets,the lightsabers,and stuff like that were inspired by the movies of Akira Kurosawa and those like him. In fact,the word "Jedi" itself came from the "jidaigeki" or "period drama." So I can see that the Japanese would probably have a particular affinity for this particular series.
But,I must remind any Japanese reader of this website who is considering getting these particular dolls for Children's Day. Darth Vader was the main villain of the original "Star Wars" films. He's not the sort of guy any decent mother or father would want their kids to emulate. So,I'll end this post with a question. Did the Japanese make similar dolls like this when the movie first came out in 1977? Last edited by Snomaster1 on Thu Jun 25, 2015 4:02 am; edited 1 time in total |

Those are expensive dolls.
But this'd be the time to do it - Episode 7 is coming. |

Most likely not, since Star Wars was not expected to be the success that it became. Thus, there wasn't much effort to make merchandise, and what few kinds of toys there were, there weren't many made. The initial action figures (of Luke, Han, and Leia--no Vader, unfortunately) had a pretty small run, but Star Wars became much more popular than anyone expected (perhaps except for George Lucas, who owned the licensing rights, and he got it in the first place because Fox, expecting the movie to flop, just handed them over to Lucas when he asked for them), and they sold out so quickly, the manufacturer had to print out claim tickets in massive quantities. If American companies were caught off guard, I'd imagine foreign ones were too. |

@leafy sea dragon,
You do realize that after the US, Japan has by FAR the largest Star Wars market in the world, right? Star Wars is more popular in Japan than Gundam. The last TV series did exceptionally well for a US cartoon. The BDs were best sellers and the merchandise sold well. [Edit]: streamlined your post by excising the quotes. You weren't breaking the rules but while I'm moderating you I decided to improve the appearance. Errinundra. ![]() |
