Ohh I see Vol. 1 of Shingeki is gone past 2 million sales. Isayama must feel like he is in a dream, he hit it big time with Shingeki, lets see if this super boost remains (not likely) even after the anime is gone (this is not long running anime) and the Titan fever calms down.

The manga is awesome and gives an overall cool badass feeling so no wonder the current Titan fever.

Manga is selling like a classic shounen (jump level) series and insane discs sale like if it was you typical super moe series that hit the jackpot with the hardcore otaku, definitely INSANE, I cannot longer see it but as a TITAN FEVER phenomenon, this is not normal by any means.

Can anyone name similar phenomenon of a (preferably recent, year 2000+ )series with manga sales in the 1.5-2+ million sales that has also achieved 60k+ anime disc sales?

Well, let's see if it can keep this up after the anime is over, or if it's just a temporary hype which is happening to peak right now.

An extra 68,472 copies for AOT's first volume ? Wow. It was obvious it was going to top 2 million sold but I was expecting it to happen a week later.

I think this is the second most busy week for Shingeki.

Quote:
47,191 - average per volume (1-8) since the premiere (19 weeks); 13 weeks remaining.

1054915, 275066 - Vol. 11 regular edition, special edition

1549182, 30404 - Vol. 10
1573244, 25712 - Vol. 9

907550, 42949 - Vol. 8
887246, 39662 - Vol. 7, lowest anime boost
887482
890646
883121
887674
895385
911142 - Vol. 1, highest anime boost

11327587 - Shingeki 2013 regular edition sales (Oricon)

18m+ - series overall Oricon reported sales, regular edition only
23m+ - series overall reported printed copies

Yeah, 1 million anime boost is practically a certainty. All volumes have ranked on the charts for 19 straight weeks; we'd be more surprised if they suddenly fall off the chart next week.

It most likely won't. It would have had a chance had One Piece only had 3 new volumes planned for 2013 (which is what I thought was planned until they had only 2 months between volume 70 in June and volume 71 in August). Wink

At any case, Oda-sensei could have finally found a "rival". I bet he's thrilled. ^^

Really happy to see Adachi's "Mix" so high in the chart, by the way. Smile

I was also surprised to see One Piece 71 out this month. I thought it would come out in mid-September. So, I suppose 72 will be out in early November? If yes, that makes it four 2013 One Piece volumes + 68-volume backlog against three 2013 Shingeki volumes + 8-volume backlog.

Yep, no chance in hell if One Piece 2013 sales is still 20+ million unless Shingeki somehow miraculously manages to get all of its volumes over 2 million copies sold each (and even if it does shockingly actually do that, it would only get it to 18m).

Right now, I just see Shingeki to getting to 15 million, enough to beat One Piece's 2009 record. Which btw, is still a very hefty accomplishment. I don't think even Naruto managed to sell 10m copies in a year. (Did it?)

Exactly. Although, depending how far early AOT volumes go and with the newer volumes selling more and more earlier in their run as the old volumes keep selling, we could have a new AOT volume topping the sales list by volume next year (unlikely of course, but possible if and only if the early AOT volumes have out of this world longevity).

I haven't been able to find yearly bestselling manga lists (with numbers of copies sold) older than 2008. This 2007 list for example just says which titles and volumes, but no copies sold.

Since Shingeki is manga original, it would probably be more accurate to compare the success of its tv anime version to K-ON! and FMA. Or Macross Frontier which though is of a huge existing franchise is manga-first.

Shingeki's selling success is difficult to compare to just one series. The way its anime boosted manga sales is probably comparable to FMA's 2003 anime, but its music sales is more comparable to K-ON while its tv anime sales is more comparable to Macross Frontier.

As much as Shingeki's (underdog status vs One Piece) is tempting me to bet more money on its corner, I am not going to predict that far ahead. Anime catgrin

One Piece latest volume print run is 4 million and Oricon sales at 3 million - that's twice Shingeki's numbers. Even FMA only got to about 2.1 million print run and about 1.3 oricon sales for its final volumes during the height of its 2009 anime.

Maybe if Shingeki gets to 3m print run 2m oricon sales for its subsequent volumes, only then will I consider it just might get to One Piece's level.

Calm your horses, it not on OP level as of yet, remember this is most likely a temporary boost, and you cannot well compare what Shingeki has accomplished with what OP has achieved over a span of 13+ years, both manga, and anime.

If you want a rival, in terms of manga, Naruto or Hunter x Hunter are better fits currently.

An yes, I love seeing MIX there as well. I am a HUGE Adachi-sensei fan, Touch is one of my top 5 fav anime ever. A want an anime of this series, hopefully it continues to do good and we get it soon enough.

@pykrete

The example I wanted is a combination of doing extraordinarily in both manga and anime. The examples you mention are comparable to an extent. K-On less, because as explained, shingeki manga is selling comparable to the most popular jump series aimed and young males, and selling discs in a level not even K-ON achieved, its getting monogatari/madoda/Gundam levels. For a series of this kind its really insane to to this.

I aint so sure FMA boosted the manga to 2+ million levels (well vol. 1 and 1.5+ for the others for shingeki) and achieved at the same time 60k in disc sales, but dont have the data to say for sure.

Blue Exorcist continues to do well. Wonder if they'll do a reboot anime when the manga gets further along with the anime sticking closes to the manga like how FMA:B did.

wow, Attack on Titans vol 11 failed. only sold 1.05M+ after two weeks. only 300k this week. They over print it. They have 800k copy still in the market that needed to sell. Over print is not a good thing.

Sales of the first Fullmetal Alchemist volume alone jumped from 150,000 copies to 1.5 million copies after the anime aired. Before the second anime series aired, each volume sold about 1.9 million copies, but each volume now sells 2.1 million copies.

I think that's printed copies, not Oricon sales copies, but that's still a million copy boost for FMA manga courtesy of the 2003 anime.

Uh, no. That's just OK. One Piece still at 2.5m of 4m. 62.5% sold in 3 weeks. Just 17 days on sale so far actually..

Shingeki is at 1m of 1.85m. 54% sold in 2 weeks. Actually just 10 days on sale. This is almost the same as One Piece 71's 10 day sales of 2.2m of 4m (55%).

There's always going to be more printed copies cause the bookstores need stock and display copies and the publishers also need stock in their warehouses to fill in additional orders. Printed copies is probably the supply for sales within a six-month time period. Maybe even a year's supply.

Also, not all stores report to Oricon.

animenewsnetwork.com/news/2013-08-21/japanese-comic-ranking-august-12-18

One Piece 71 - 1,542,134 of 4m - 38.5% oricon sales in first 3 days.
Shingeki 11 - 764,022 of 1.85m - 41.3% in first 3 days

One Piece 71 - 2,229,064 of 4m - 55.7% in 10 days
Shingeki 11 - 1,054,915 of 1.85m - 57% in 10 days

One Piece 71 - 2,487,632 of 4m - 62% in 17 days

Since the percentages is similar - Shingeki 11 is probably going to sell about 100k copies next week.
