Asamiya has posted a preview illustration for the series on his Twitter and blog, see here. QD is short for Quadriga. The series is set seventeen years after the original title.

As a fan of the original series, I'm excited. He's been dropping hints about a potential sequel for over a decade so it's nice that he's been able to get a new serialization off the ground for the 25th anniversary of SM.

I'll check it out. Still, spinoffs of older series with new casts? This is usually a sign of disaster to come. I cite Kiddy Girl_And, Aquarion Evol, Last Exile: Fam the Silver Wing, and Eureka Seven: Astral Ocean as worst case scenarios. I'm seriously hoping this will be a good example of one for a change though.

Yeah, but weren't those other series mentioned not by the authors of the original shows?

In the new Silent Moebius case, it's the original artist making the sequel.

I think an important difference to note is that Asamiya has always considered the original SM series to just be one part of a larger story. Klein was his attempt to explain what happened before SM and he's been trying for quite sometime to put together a sequel that explores the world after the events of SM.

Also all the sequels you mentioned are anime, which are a little different to manga projects. I get the cynicism but here is a creator who has been trying for over a decade to put together a follow-up serial, he obviously has a story he wants to tell. Whether or not it will be any good, well, we'll just have to wait and see.

One question I have is will the original characters play a role in this new manga? Maybe have them running this new group. I'm kindda hopping they do.

Haven't commented on here in awhile, then I saw this piece of news today, and I got really excited. I was a big fan of the manga and anime back in the day so I'm really happy to see a sequel finally happening. I do have a few questions though.

If I remember Kia Asamiya tried to start another story called Silent Möbius Neos, whatever happened with that? Did it just get cancelled?

If they ever decide to animate Silent Möbius QD, then how are they going to explain the ending to the original series, it was never animated. The anime series from 1998 just stops right before the final battle.

QD seems to be what we're getting rather than Neos, his original sequel idea. Once more is revealed about QD it will be interesting to see how much overlap there is with the snippets he once revealed about Neos.

A QD anime is a pretty big stretch at this point, but there's nothing to stop a Klein-esque recap of past events to fill in the unresolved issues from the anime ending. At this point, the biggest question Asamiya keeps not-answering on his Twitter is spoiler["Will one of the heroines be Roy & Katsumi's daughter?"]

Asamiya hasn't revealed this yet, though the primary characters will be new, given his penchant for cameos there's nothing to say previous characters won't play a role.

Sorry to double post, but Asamiya has posted an LQ image of the Quadriga announcement from the new issue of Monthly Young Magazine -- see here (kind of NSFW because of the gravure content).

I'm surprised that this series is getting revisited. I've never read the comics or seen the anime. Hell, I never saw the movie that was produced back in the late 80's. That's one that not many have seen. But I do know of the remake TV series that came out during the latter 90's. This series has been Kia Asamiya's life work for a long time.
