Man, have I been out of the loop. Surely anime pricing in Japan can't have been this bad before this decade? I remember paying $40 per tape for my original Stardust Memory VHS tapes (individually, mind you) thinking that in the 90's that it was kind of pricey but very worth it since it was far more of a niche back then. Can these anime studios truly afford to price at these premiums in the face of rampant piracy? The state of the industry truly worries me... Sad

I'm not really sure about pre DVD pricing, but ever since DVDs came around, 2 episodes for 60-70 dollars was standard late night pricing. They price it this high since the anime market is very small, and the only way to really sustain itself is to have the hardcore fans pay a premium. But on the flip side, this prices the more "casual" fans out of buying anime, leaving anime being made for only the most hardcore... thus, all the moe, ecchi and other otaku shows.

A vicious cycle.

That's because you don't understand the economy behind the anime industry.
Pricing has remained pretty much the same since 90's. And most of them are still niche.
Did you bought Gundam 0083 VHS as used copy or clearance? Just look at price label behind the package and calculate with $1=100 Yen exchange rate. Brand new LD version was 5800 yen or about $60 per volume/$780 for all volumes. Also VHS version is tend to cheaper.

Most Japanese people don't buy physical copy of anime titles that they have watched on TV or internet except hardcore fans. Pretty much same for the West as well. We sell whole anime DVD/BD series for $60 and yet they don't make money large enough to leave a footprint on actual Japanese TV animation production. Why is that?

Anime distributors in the Japan can charge high premium prices because it makes better profit than cheap DVD/BD's. Even with high price, they sell an average of 5,000 to 8,000 copies per volume. High price always have been paying off actual production cost despite what you think..

So, 5,000 copies X 8 volumes X $70(premium edition) = $2.8 million. It's a break even profit.

Please read AnIme Economy Part 2 article from this news site. It explains the Japanese pricing system better.

That and it's really silly to pay the MSRP unless you really want some cool store bonus. Between Amazon and HMV, at least, one can buy their anime at a discount.

please, don't look at the dollar amount. it's meaningless because you can't buy it with USD in Japan. Look Yen amount. 7,560 yen. around 7000 yen is standard pricing.

You have to exchange your USD to yen before you can buy it.

If $1 is still = 140 yen like 4 years ago, it would be like $54. US dollar is just not worth as much as before.
