For those of us that kept saying this would effect mainstream anime this isn't very unexpected news. Those saying this law was only going to effect lolicons must be shocked.

Unless It's on TBS or AT-X It's almost always censored.
Censors that pop up on these 2 stations are intentional to drive DVD/Blu-Ray sales.

MX always censors direct panty shots. Never seen boobs either.

If this were true, it would be on the basis of weeding out people with tendencies against the law, that is, with criminal tendencies (like not having problems with teenagers watching anime with pantyshots in them).

That the acts in question were not illegal until a few weeks ago when some dimwits decided to turn a large segment of the japanese population into criminals by passing a stupid law wouldn't factor into the matter.

So yes, it'd be prejudice and yes, it'd be monumentally stupid. So let's hope it's not true (although I'm low in optimism).

Well, you have to remember that this is the country in which you're Guilty before you're innocent and if you are in a car accident, you caused that accident with criminal intent.

This does not affect anime/manga market what so ever. What it affect is tv BROADCASTING and weekly magazine publishing. Just buy/DL DVD and tankobons - they will have no censorship.

Don't let the magazine fool you. I heard from a friend of mine living in Tokyo that all the 7-elevens there are relocating their 16+ Manga to the Porn shelves(despite not containing any actual sex).I also heard a rumor that legendary classics such as Akira are also affected by the Youth Ordinance if they continue under circulation. That alone already makes me staunchly opposed to the bill. (That and the fact it was proposed by a sexist/xenophobe/racist like Shintaro Ishihara who cannot appreciate one of Japan's greatest pop cultures.)

Freedom of Speech and Expression should have no bounds or limits. I like my Anime & Manga the way it is. I love all the expressions unique to that artform. I love the controversy it strikes. Don't take all that away from us.

Come on Japan, we know you can turn this around. Don't let the right-wing extremist hi-jack your system and impose their brand of "morals" which really curtails entertainment. Don't become another America.

*Hopes for Japanese equivalent to the Tunisa's revolution, but with an otaku touch* =p

Yeah, because musicians who don't get radio air time have record sales on iTunes.

Don't delude yourself. This WILL hurt the industry. The fact that a TV station has already turned to cutting ties to anime fans is just the beginning. Soon, they'll refuse to air anything that even requires censoring. And if you can't get your show to air anywhere, how do you expect to sell the DVD? The studio and production commitee will think "might as well produce something tamer and get air-time on a station than end up with a sure-fire failure in our hands"

Unless It's on TBS or AT-X It's almost always censored.
Censors that pop up on these 2 stations are intentional to drive DVD/Blu-Ray sales.

It's possible that they'll be looking beyond just fanservice and go after inuendo and implied situations as well so even if the show has censored images it may still need to pass for story content. Seikon no Qwaser II for example probably wont stand a chance if what the magazine says is true.
