Okay, now I know something seems screwy here. Middle-aged otaku can't possibly be the only audience this show has like many anime fans claim. There must some other age demographics like pre-teen/teenage girls or something that must've watched this show for the name to be the 4th most tweeted word in Japan. I mean what kind of television channel was K-ON on in Japan?

If I recall, 28 of them in fact, which is I believe 7 times more than what the first season ran on.

Oh, wow! That's more channels a single show has ever been syndicated on than any show I know of on American television. Though, what about the channels themselves? What type of channels are they in general or rather what kind of age demographics did they target?

From what I saw of the second season, it seemed like they intentionally aimed at a wider audience and had less focus on otaku-pandering.

No multiple beach episodes, no "moe moe kyun" memes, Sawako isn't creeping the girls out, and there's less of an obsession with Mio's rear-end. It's still there -- I don't think there's a male with 500 meters of the school, Yui's still an airhead, and Azusa looks about 11. But it's like the producers were given depo-provera shots between seasons.

Gotta understand, almost all of those channels were local stations. Each major region or whatnot has its own line of TV stations if I recall correctly.

thats the only anime related subject up there. if I recall correctly Oreimo was on the top 10 worldwide topics for about two days running. Does this mean only "Otaku-pandering" shows are talked about online?

K-on fanboy by the way Smile

Anecdotal evidence, but I had a Japanese co-worker (normal guy) whose two daughters (ages 7 & 10) got into the show. So probably the series just hit some critical mass and snowballed into the general populace's consciousness.

Plus walk into any anime con IN AMERICA and the series is pretty popular on either side of the gender divide—in my interactions with attendees it has been about a 50-50 split between guys who know all the songs, and girls who know all the songs.

(But the guys are always these creeper 25-35 dudes weighing approx. 280 lbs and carrying SERIOUS DSLR cameras all the better to take pantyshots with Anime cry )

Could just be the same four otaku endlessly retweeting eachother.

Lol, which of the "many anime fans" were asked? Also, it's not like teens and preteen girls are the only ones who are tweeting... In fact I'd wager that in Japan, there less teens and younger who are tweeting.

Anyways, according to this which refers Otakuma, a Japanese social networking/dating site, the first season of K-On ranked 2nd amongst its female members. Also I'm not sure where the whole image of "everyone's a middle-aged otaku" comes from... you don't really see many middle-aged and older otaku at Japanese or western conventions.

K-On (the manga, I don't really watch animu) was pretty cute, I thought it was kind of a creative idea- but honestly, to be this popular- it cannot possibly be only otaku reading and tweeting.

I would have expected it to be in the top 10, but more like number 10, and I would have thought goodnight would be more top 5, but if K-On is making money hand over fist with merchandise, then more than otaku are buying it,

the show does appease to young women and children, so I can see why it is so popular,

I think if bandai would license the second season, and was able to get the show on disney or even nick or CN, where the young girls are, then it might be an even bigger hit here as well, plus if disney has their hands in it, and it became very popular, I can guarantee there would be more seasons made, unfortunately then it would take a more western look and feel, with the music

I am still waiting for a K-On college show, it will happen if the money dries up on merchandise, K-On seems to be driving the japanese economy Razz

Some how, it makes sense train is the first word, but I actually surprised that moe isn't on that list. That list does make sense, but given that moe is easily a multi billion market, I would have figured that word would have been there.

That's the weird thing about this whole "K-on outtweeting Goodnight"- if K-On is on there, I'm surprised stuff like "Moe" isn't.

I know, that is what truly is a mystery. What isn't a mystery is that the author of K-On is likely to financially set for a long time because I remember hearing how the show is selling in the millions. I am not sure about billions, but if more work is created, it's likely.

I figure most people don't actually say "moe". They'd probably use various emoticons instead from what I've seen
