God help us all.
This is the same thing that's happening with Aniplex USA: cutting out the US distributors means that Japanese companies will be directly in charge...who often, have *no idea* how the US market works. We all remember the Bandai Visual debacle.
What benefits are there to bringing distribution "in-house"?
1 - Kodansha can rarely meet street dates, even for things like Akira and Ghost in the Shell
2 - the pricing does not reflect current market values
3 - print quality isn't exactly great
4 - flooded the market with old re-releases of GITS
5 - I don't think they even have a website. How will they get fan feedback?

Well, this is certainly terrible news. I also saw that Delrey has delayed the street release date for Shugo Chara vol.10. I seriously hope DelRey isn't going out of business. They're one of the best companies out there.

Ah, well, that was unexpected but Del Rey hasn't been doing so well for a while anyway. I'm going to try and be optimistic and hope this is a good thing (especially since Kodansha took their licenses away from a number of manga a couple of years ago, like Beck, and haven't done anything since), maybe they'll have more information at NYAF since that's coming up really soon?

I am hoping for the best. Pricing does not bother me, but I would prefer that the quality of ink, paper, and translations be high.

This seems like it could be the kind of thing that's a change in name only, and doesn't really affect the readers much aside from a logo change. If Dallas Midduagh is involved, it's reasonable to assume they'll be working with more or less the same translators and editors, etc., only under Kodansha's name. Hopefully what will come out of this will be better release dates and more titles. I imagine they can bring over any Kodansha title they want since they don't have to buy the license from themselves.

Note to Kodansha: The US market is different. Stopping titleslike Rave 3-5 volumes from finishing proves you hate us.
PLEASE FINISH RAVE.

I checked three different websites, and the 10th volume of Shugo Chara is only listed on Barnes and Noble's website as coming out on Feb.22. It's not listed on Borders or Amazon at all. Redlinks, where exactly did you see that Del Rey delayed this one?

This is so effed up.
Del Rey was one of the icons of how to do it right. With few exceptions.
It was pretty quality. Doubt that will hold up unless they pretty much retain the entire company. Let's hope that's the case.

Keep your fingers crossed that they will.

Well this is F***ING great! There goes the nice color prints in the first print versions of xxxholic, and the translator notes at the end of every volume. Hopefully the quality of the Del Rey prints will be kept for the titles we are currently consuming. BUT with the responses from the peeps here, it sounds like the nice quality printing I enjoy from Del Rey is going to go bye-bye!

Hopefully this changes the usual snail's pace US manga licensee's seem to suffer from. Heck, maybe we can finally get Kara no Kyoukai now...

I'm not really a manga fan. I don't buy hardly any manga... but Del Ray published the only manga series I ever completed collecting (Genshiken), so this news saddens me a bit. I hope this turns out better for manga than the Bandai Visual snafu did for DVD/BluRays.
