Man, I just knew it! I was discussing things with one of the MB guys at Megacon and all he said was a recent anime (from the past year) of a manga he loved was gonna be acquired.

I've never read Blade of the Immortal, so I have no real way to make a comparison to the manga, but the anime itself was fairly interesting. Far less gory than Shigurui, but a straight up tale of revenge. From what I've gathered, fans of the manga pretty much rejected it, and it took like 26 weeks to get fansubbed, for only 13 episodes at that, by only one group.

And why they're dubbing it is because it's not so niche if they advertise right, it's short enough. I also heard it was shocking for Bee Train to do so much blood, but I supposed it's still toned down. I'd say the anime is at least worth a rental.

I higly recommend to read the manga, which is one of the best ones I've ever read. Anime version was really rushed, uninteresting and ended abruptly basically saying "read the manga".

I've been a huge fan of the manga for over a decade. I'll have to check out the anime.

I'd recommend that anyone who is a "huge fan of the manga" stay away from the anime. You'll more than likely be hugely disappointed.

That said, anyone unfamiliar with the series should just read the manga. I don't understand why they even made the anime - it's a waste of time.

Cool, this has really made my day. Its a shame the series never finished being subbed, but I'd certainly add it to my collection on DVD.

For anyone who hasn't checked out Blade yet, IMO it is easily one of the best sleeper hit manga available in english, long before the U.S manga GN boom. Its worth collecting all of the GNs, for the superb art alone. Highly recommended.

I have to hand it to Dark Horse, for picking it up many years ago. I guess this series is very adult gekiga, so its not for faint hearted young fans, who dig emo andro boys etc. I do think once its on DVD, it will find a home with the mature anime fan, like myself.

Thanks, Media Blasters.

Ouch. The manga sure as heck isn't a straight-up tale of revenge. If that's the impression the anime gave, then it messed up, big time.

Not to mention the massive decay of the art style; Samura's work is so incredibly detailed, it couldn't be imitated by animation. The only reason I'd want to see this is for the voice acting.

Also, while twice as long as the run-time is a bit excessive, taking longer than one week per episode can happen often for any fansubbing group if they're doing the job carefully. They...okay, we are not professionals; we have jobs or school, and often don't have much free time. That's part of why you want a professional release: an amateur subtitling will generally be either well-done and take a long time, or hastily done and sloppy. Someone needs to be paid so that they can focus more closely on their work rather than juggling it with other commitments as a hobby.

Well, considering I combed the Media Blaster's website (and Rare Flims site) but found zero information about the second season. From where I stood, when it was announced the second season was to be announced, I thought the second season got indefinitly delayed. But according to ANN, the first dvd will ship 6/30/09.

Since the site never said anything about this, I never knew until now. So I take by my previous comment back. But lack of news causes frustration though.

But what surprizes me more is that Media Blasters actually licensed a show that isn't complete garbage or is nothing but fanservice or watered down moe.

Edit: You have to admit, Media Blasters has licensed several moe/fanservice shows though.

I know absolutely nothing about this series.

Quote:
Koichi Mashimo directed the animators on Bee Train on this project, as he did for the .hack// franchise, Noir, and the ongoing series Phantom ~Requiem for the Phantom~ . Hiroyuki Kawasaki (The Irresponsible Captain Tylor, Sorcerer Hunters) oversaw the scripts, and Yoshimitsu Yamashita (Murder Princess, Samurai Champloo animation director) designed the characters.

But given the above pedigree I'm willing to bet it's awesome. Rub dub a dub dub, thank God it won't be just a sub.

FYI- Since starting their subbed-only releases, it's been about 1/2 and 1/2, with the following series getting dubs-
-Tweeny Witches [this dub is just fantastic btw]
-Phoenix [boxset ed. for 20 bucks! GEEETTT ITTTT NOOOWWW!]
-Genshiken OVA/Kujibiki Unbalance TV
-Ah My Buddha!
-Genshiken 2 TV series
-Seirei no Moribito

I think that's all of them..... the generally give dubs to titles they think'll sell better, with sub-only releases to titles that might not be profitable with a dub, but still have demand for a DVD release.

It's also been confirmed that Ikki Tosen Dragon Destiny will have a dub, though it's not been scheduled yet.

I'm really glad to see Blade of the Immortal licensed and'll definitely be buying it.

Yet they have yet to ever release the second season of Genshiken. I was willing to forget the past if they made a follow up about the shows that have been delayed, but of course they didn't.

But what surprizes me more is that Media Blasters actually licensed a show that isn't complete garbage or is nothing but fanservice or watered down moe.

FYI- It was initially solicited for a July release, tehn delayed a couple weeks till August, so it's on the way, and we should see vol.2 pop up in next month's solicitations.

Like Bandai Ent, Media Blasters has sometimes delayed titles so they can be released at optimum times for retailers and ensure better shelfspace- Best Buy's requests is what lead them to switch boxsets to a "litebox" format, with Strawberry Panic being released in a 5-disc case rather then their usual paperbox w/singles. ShelfSpace is limited, and the better the price and timing they have , the better they'll do overall, so you can't blame em.

John Sirabella often pops up at AnimeonDVD's forums whenever a "why's it delayed?" whingefest thread occurs, and usually tells it like it is, explaining the reasons behind it, which is often "Best Buy" nowadays [I wish he'd randomly drop license announcements again though]. The retail space for anime is apparently much smaller now, back to it's late 90's niche levels [still solid, but not giagantic]

If you want something that isn't fanservice/moe oriented, get Tweeny Witches! It's pretty snazzy. Likewise Moriboto. The fanservice/moe stuff usually just gets quicky subonly releases from them, though they've managed to even get some good shows among those [Simoun's downright fantastic and surprising, and gives you a story you'd least expect from it's cutesy designs, and Magical Witch Punie-Chan is very subversive]

I tried watching this, I was beyond lost, and well frankly I didn't like it. Maybe a dub I could better understand it, but that's a stretch. Oh well might as well buy a copy seeing as I watched the first episode as a fansub. Wonder who they'll get to dub it?

I haven't read the manga (though I hear it is very good) nor seen the anime. But I figured this would get licensed. What I didn't expect is a bunch of negative posts about it. Now I did read some reviews of the first episodes when it first came out, and they were pretty positive. So color me surprised.

I just wonder how much of this is the actual show hate, or Bee Train/Production IG hate. Hopefully the latter.

On the ratings so far the 44 people who rated it very good have had a higher trustworthiness score than 45 people who rated it good.
