Wow, your Code Geass DVDs actually worked completely? Anyway, I really need to get that LE when I get the money.
I wish I could use my closet to store all my manga and anime. But it's just full of clothes and other stuff no one uses. |

I was really hoping that Strawberry Panic! would turn out to be than what it seems like it's going to be. So sad I wasted all that time on the first nine episodes. As for Simoun, I'll admit, I only watched that because of the "yuri" theme, which wasn't present per se. The whole spring thing threw it for a loop. I do however agree that it deserves more attention than it gets, though I don't rank it as one of my most enjoyed series.

These Games have actually been great; I normally don't care for the Summer Games, but pay a lot of attention to the Winter (HOCKEY FTW!), but I've been watching this year's. Phelps making history and Usain Bolt going so fast that he could decelerate into the finish line and STILL break the World Record was amazing to see. And I have been pleasantly surprised by Code Geass; there are some parts that irk me but as a whole it's kept me interested. |

If you can find an LE....I live in a relatively backwaters place (Roanoke), and all the stores here sold out within the first day... Hell, I barely found mine. By the way..."Lelouche?" I mean...his name's on the BOX dude. It'd be cool if you messed up once or twice, but really, every time? Not very professional, Bamboo. |

I disagree with the final verdicts of three of the four Anime spotlighted here.
I would rate Simoun as "Rental". This is based on personal preference; the whole Yuri angle ensures I will never buy it. I could get through one viewing, but there would be zip re-watch value. And anyway, could you actually see someone like me going into a store and hand that cover to the person behind the counter? I was embarrassed enough when I bought Chobits. I would rate Strawberry Panic as "Perishable". Quite simply, it doesn't offer anything that other Anime already provide in far better packages. Besides, I prefer my mind to stay numb-free, thankyou very much. I would leave Freedom as "Rental". Quite simply, it's shear insanity to charge US$180 for such a short series. Shear insanity. And the industry wonders why it is in trouble? Finally, I would rate Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion as "Sub Zero". Or maybe put it in the freezer*. It's just that good. And Lelouch isn't all bad. I thought episode three made that quite clear**. * Top Gear knowledge required. ** I'm a die-hard Lelouch supporter. So ostracise me. |

Wow, you reviewed a hell of a lot of DVDs for this week's column, Bamboo. Nice work.
Glad to see both Code Geass and Simoun in Shelf Worthy. I'll be picking up the LE and volume 5 respectively for those two series, in the next couple weeks (I hope). By the way, did you watch Geass in English or Japanese? From the little I've heard of the English track through trailers, I think I'll wind up preferring the Japanese that I initially watched it in, but some perspective would be nice. As for Lelouch being a dick, I dunno. He's got his moments where he definitely isn't admirable, but I think he's more been caught up by his abilities and a burning hatred for dear old dad than anything else. There's a lot of chess piece analogies, yeah, but he doesn't really consider subordinates expendable. Suzaku, on the other hand...well, there's shades of gray to everything.
Don't worry, there's plenty of us |

Just be happy you don't like Suzaku more, in season 2 people really got to hate him if they did not already. Go Suzaku! |

^^;; I think I kept mixing up his name because all I could think of was "douche." Thanks for the correction. @ Big Hed: I watched it in Japanese. |

I think Code Geass is overrated. The earlier episodes were really good, the whole first season had some silly or really stupid moments, but overall was a good watch. But the later episodes just couldn't live up to this anymore, imho. And finally I lost complete interest in the second season right now, it just got too silly for me I think.
Anyway, Lelouch is maybe based on "le louche" "the shady one/dubious one" ... fits him quite well. While Suzaku is the Vermillion Bird ... quite the opposite of something shady ^^;;
He did oO; He completely only cares for Nunnally and his revenge spoiler[at least in the beginning, since the series is all about Lulu learning the importance of friends etc., while at the beginning he was ready to sacrifice them for his cause and so he did.] |

Having only seen the first nine episodes, it's not yuri enough for me. There's more focus on war, gender, politics, and religion; which isn't a bad thing, but the show is being pushed as yuri. Guess it would help if I cared about any of the characters. I agree that the cover art is really cheesy, right up there with the ritual girl-girl kissing and the eyecatches. R.O.D the TV had the same problem with the covers, but I only saw it on TV so I only knew about it after I finished the series, which I liked a whole lot better. Maybe if I watch the whole show, I'd appreciate Simoun more, but rental isn't an option for me, the fansub's typography annoyed the hell out of me, and I'm not exactly all fired up to buy the DVDs. |

It gets really good after episode 13 or so, and it gets really really good after episode ~17, so I would give it a second chance |

I didn't think so; spoiler[if anything, Lelouch had to work harder to keep subordinates alive in the beginning, so that when the Black Knights were revealed they seemed more like an invulnerable force than "just a bunch of terrorists".] spoiler[But yeah, as the series progressed, Lelouch definitely becomes more reliant on allies/friends (although at the point R2 is at, that's starting to change significantly).] Thanks for the information on possible origins for Lelouch's and Suzaku's names, by the way, I hadn't even thought to look. |

I'd re-read that bolded part, Labbes, lol. Anyways, I'm fairly interested in Simoun, but doubt I'll ever get around to watching it... |

In regards to Simoun, I'll be honest and admit the talk about the yuri aspect to the series is what originally drew me in. But once the series and various plot points got going, I kinda forgot all about the yuri and was more taken by all the drama and action throughout the series.
It really was one of my more favorite series in 2008. From the music (haunting, classical touches) to the animation quality, (esp. when they would highlight a scene with that painted, brushstoke look), the show was really above the norm. I realize that the story did not connect with everyone, but it certainly struck a chord with me. At times I thought to myself there was more yuri on the boxcovers than what went on in the show itself. But maybe that's the age old way of getting someone to take a second look at the title and possibly buying it. |
