Well, there is some pretty unnecessary stuff of that kind at the beginning of the manga (first two volumes), probably because back then (2004) everybody thought, that dark fantasy manga had to have that kind of stuff (back then). Luckily, the mangaka soon evolved from that stereotypical (unnecessary) use of those topics and, as far as I remember, they do not reoccur. So if you like the storyline and the characters, please do not be discouraged from reading the entire story. There are some hiccups with the quality of the art and the story after the first arc due to a writer´s blockade of the mangaka during the second arc, but with proper animation and proper handling by the anime´s directors the anime should be able to compensate those flaws, and I am sure we will get a lot of good entertainment worth lots of hours and lots of popcorn.

What does that mean? They locked him out of his studio? He had writer's block? If the latter, wouldn't that have had to be resolved before it could even continue? I really don't know what you're saying happened.

He's protected by his garterbelt.
Speaking of odd costuming, does Peepi ever get to wear actual clothes, or is she doomed to barely there lingerie forever? The OP doesn't give me hope.
I already forgot I guess why they need to catch the boat? I thought it was to bypass the monastery and walls, but that's been made moot. So now that they have an airship and a dragon, and no border obstacles to contend with, what do they need with the boat?

This is just me being very nitpicky, but: brutalism is actually very modern! Brutalist architecture emerged in the 1950's, and the style of blocky concrete buildings associated with it did not exist during medieval times. So, you could chalk that up to being another stylistic anachronism in this series.
