Thanks for this review (which I haven't read to avoid spoilers). I'd been letting the volumes accumulate unread. I binged the first few volumes, then went off and got books about the Kowloon Walled City, since the setting is so compelling.
But, yes, it is slow in revealing its treasures, and the wait between volumes meant I fell off reading it. It does work well, reading the or for volumes at a time. |

Now I've caught up with the manga and read the review.
The first three or so volumes are basically about life in Kowloon Walled City, a stateless community that was the result in a bug in the tray establishing Hong Kong as a colony. That part is interesting simply because of the setting. It has a small collection of recurring characters, vague hints of romance, and even vague hints that something strange is going on. After a few volumes, the "something strange is going on" becomes more obvious, though what that strange thing is, is not clear. Then volumes 5 through 8 kick it into high gear, and it begins to seem that Christopher Nolan might be a good choice to direct a movie adaptation. |
