Well with three new systems launching (360 was nearly in 2006) I'm not surprised the Video game industry saw an increase. Have you seen the pictures of people still trying to DS lites? It's insane, I heard that if you want to know what the birth rate of Japan is look at the number of DS lite sales for that particular month.

Otherwise I had no idea that anime made up such a large portion of the DVD sales over in Japan. I'd have to imagine that for the US market it doesn't even surpass 5%.

That should tell you that anime is an important part of their economy. Notice I said an and not the. Rental sales going up probably means people are being smart about spending so much, since those otaku over either work mediocre jobs or they're computer geeks.

Ehh, these days they've been trying to convert to 3 episodes a DVD, I have some myself, and at times including some extras. Why would they need to put English subs on there? It's their own language.

I get the two episode bit, but why would JAPANESE people want English subs, perhaps they want Japanese subs.

I doubt we'll ever know any of the american market shares for anime seeing as how protective anime companies are. It's good to know that people in Japan are still supporting the companies that bring them anime.

Why do I want French, Portugese or Italian subtitles on mine? (Charmed in French. Sure....) I don't even want the Spanish, but I can see it makes sense for where I live.

And a few have apparently experimented with the idea of it. I know at CD Japan they have a section for stuff with English subtitles. Mostly movies it looks like, though.
